But now I find out why there are so few compound surnames around us. Where have all these traditional surnames gone? There is only one reason: it is to change the surname to a single surname. The biggest surname change happened three times in history: the pre-Qin period, the Taihe period of the Northern Wei Dynasty, and the Hongwu period of Zhu Yuanzhang of the Ming Dynasty.

First, the pre-Qin surname:

Second, the Northern Wei Dynasty Taihe changed its surname

After the Eastern Han Dynasty, Wei and Jin Dynasties, the five Hu and sixteen countries entered the Central Plains, bringing a large number of compound surnames, such as Helan and Tuoba. After the troubled times were settled, Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty ordered that the surnames of these Hu people be changed to Han surnames. Except for a few surnames, such as He Ruo and Sun Qiang, all the others were changed to China surnames, and nearly a hundred were changed. For example, Ge Gu changed his surname to Hu, Qiu Muling changed his surname to Mu, and Helan changed his surname to He. Tuoba's family, the royal family of the Northern Wei Dynasty, changed its surname to Yuan.

Third, Hongwu changed his surname.

When the Ming Dynasty was founded, the Yuan Dynasty ruled for 98 years, so when the regime returned to the hands of the Han people, Zhu Yuanzhang launched Hongwu immigration, which was also a compulsory ethnic migration. It also stipulates that Mongolian surnames are directly prohibited, and Han people are required to change multi-word surnames into single-word surnames. From then on, Uncle Sun, Uncle Sun were all surnamed Sun. Zhao's surname is Si, and he changed his surname to Wang. By the middle and late Ming Dynasty, there were not many compound surnames of China.

Finally, the Manchu established the Qing regime, and familiar compound surnames appeared again, such as Ye Henala and Ai Xinjue Roche. In the late Qing Dynasty, these surnames were consciously changed to single surnames. For example, most descendants of Yehnara changed their surnames? So what? . Ai Xinjue Roche, the first surname outside the customs? Zhao? And basically everyone in the customs has changed their surnames? Kim. .

Of course, the word surname changed from compound surname is also partly someone else's surname.

In the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a surname Gong, the Nangong was the Nangong, and Gong was Gong, which was a different surname. But later the Nangong changed its surname to Gong, and two different families became one surname. Today, there are still many Yuan surnames. If we push them up, our ancestors will be named Tuoba. However, not all ancestors surnamed Yuan were domineering, and it is also possible that they were originally surnamed Yuan.
