What is the history of Singapore?
The history and origin of Singapore:
1. Singapore was called Temasek in ancient times. In the 8th century, it belonged to the Sri Lankan dynasty. It was part of the Malay Kingdom of Johor in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1819, the Englishman Stamford Raffles arrived in Singapore and made a contract with the Sultan of Johor to establish a new trading post. In 1824, it became a British colony and became the British entrepot trading port in the Far East and the main military base in Southeast Asia. Occupied by Japan in 1942. After Japan surrendered in 1945, Britain resumed colonial rule and designated it as a direct colony the following year.
2. The history of Singapore can be traced back to the 3rd century, when aboriginal people were already living there. Its earliest documented records come from "Wu Shi Foreign Biography" written by Kang Tai, a general of the Eastern Wu Dynasty in the 3rd century. According to research by Singaporean scholar Xu Yunqiao , Pulau Ujong is the antithesis of the Malay word "Pulau Ujong". "Pulau Ujong" is the oldest name of Singapore Island, meaning "the island at the end of the Malay Peninsula".
3. At the end of the 14th century, Parameswara, a descendant of the royal family of Sri Lanka's deceased kingdom, came to Singapore. However, soon after, he offended the Ayutthaya Kingdom of Siam, which caused the other party to send troops to Pahang to attack Temasek. . Paramesura was defeated and fled to Malacca. He changed the name of Wuyu Island to Mansika and established the Kingdom of Malacca (Mansika, Malacca). In 1414, Paramesura married the princess of the Posan Kingdom of Sumatra and converted to Islam, attracting many Muslims to do business in Manchuria.
4. Because the Kingdom of Malacca is located in the Strait of Malacca and has a superior geographical location, it quickly developed into an international trade center in Southeast Asia and an entrepot for exchanges between the East and the West. With the arrival of the Portuguese and Dutch and the rise of Aceh, Singapore became involved in regional games. The Portuguese burned the stronghold at the mouth of the river in 1613. From 1600 to 1700, Singapore gradually declined.
5. Singapore’s modern history began on January 29, 1819. Raffles landed in Singapore on behalf of the British East India Company, signed a formal treaty with Sultan Hushen and Temenggong of Johor, and ruled Singapore.
In 1824, two new treaties made Singapore officially a British dependent territory. As a free port, Singapore attracts immigrants from surrounding countries. Singapore has developed rapidly and has become a Southeast Asian business and trade hub with a majority of ethnic Chinese, including Malays, Indians and Europeans. In 1821, the first batch of Chinese immigrants sailed from Xiamen to Singapore. By 1836, the overseas Chinese population in Singapore increased to 13,749.
