Are Hong Kong people Hakkas?
The ancestors of Laoke were Hakka farmers who came to Hong Kong from Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi and other places in the early Qing Dynasty to reclaim government wasteland.
Old customers living in rural New Territories still retain Hakka dialects and customs, and the house they live in has a unique architectural style. The main parts of Hakka houses are divided into upper, middle and lower halls and left and right horizontal houses. The third hall is also called the third floor. When the population increases, Hakkas tend to build more houses. There are sometimes watchtowers at the four corners of horizontal houses, which are called four-corner houses or enclosed buildings. Chen's Sanzhai in Tsuen Wan and Zeng's Dawei in Sha Tin are typical Hakka buildings.
Most of the Hakkas in the New Territories came to Hong Kong at or after the border relocation incident. To put it simply, Hakkas are "Hakka" residents who were recruited to reclaim land because there were not enough residents in Xin 'an County, which played a great role in the economic development at that time.
Most of the Hakkas in Hong Kong immigrated to Hong Kong from eastern Guangdong between 1700 and 1750, but a few did not move in until after 1800. Their ancestral homes are generally Wuhua, Xingning and Meixian, and a small number of them come from Fujian, Huizhou and other places near Hong Kong. Because they immigrated to Hong Kong by thousands and established more than 400 villages, they could compete with the locals in quantity and economic ability, so they were not assimilated.
Until AD1970s, Hakkas lived in the countryside of the New Territories in Hong Kong and lived a simple and simple rural life. Their living conditions are more difficult than those of the locals, and they are more willing to go out to make a living.
