Starting from the Western Zhou Dynasty, various ethnic groups and tribes within the territory continued to merge, forming the Huaxia people in the Yellow River Basin and the Chu people in the Huaihe, Sishui, Yangtze and Han River basins. During this period, the Huaxia and Chu ethnic groups gradually formed and became the predecessors of the modern Han nation, distinguishing them from the Yi, Man, Rong, Di and other ethnic groups. At this time, the Han population was still mainly distributed in the Yellow River and Huaihe River basins.
