Go to the East is a modern historical drama directed by Kong Sheng, written by Gao Mantang and Sun Jianye, and starring Li Youbin, Salina, Song Jia and Zhu. It premiered on CCTV- 1 prime time on June 2, 2008.

The play tells the story of Zhu Kaishan (Li Youbin)' s family who came to Baishan Heishui from their hometown in Shandong due to war and famine. They searched for gold, cut down trees and collected ginseng, and fought against bandits, government officials and feudalism, and survived again and again. Finally, they had their own countryside, but the local gentry regarded it as a "foreign land". After many difficulties and struggles, Jia Zhu passed on the more advanced farming techniques to the local people, and the local people became brothers with them.

Review of "Braving the Guandong"

"Going to the East" focuses on the immigration tide in China's modern history, which reproduces the inextricable relationship between people and families, families and countries in a family, but actually projects the rise and fall of the whole country. The play begins with the story of Zhujiajian Island's family of five, and presents a modern history of China to the audience from the perspective of ordinary people.

The plot of the play came to an abrupt end after the September 18th Incident, which was a very clever pause. After this incident, the people of China opened a very cruel and long road of resistance. In the play, Zhu Chuanwu, the second son of the Zhujiajian family, has died for the war of resistance against Japan, and all China people, including the Zhujiajian family, will be helpless in the war. I don't know if the creative team did it on purpose, but the heaviness of the word "anti-Japanese" completely blended into Zhujiajian Island's family contradiction.
