The benefits of permanent residence in Germany
after investigating the relationship between the courses taken by international students and their employability in Australia after graduation, researchers at p>Deakin University have reached a preliminary conclusion: those international students who have obtained permanent residence or citizenship are more likely to win the favor of Australian employers.
Dr. Cate Gribble, the research project leader and senior researcher of Deakin University's Faculty of Art and Education, presented this report at the second national conference of the Council of International Students Australia (CISA).
Gribble said that whether an international student is unemployed or employed after graduation depends most on his/her visa. "Many employers require applicants to hold a permanent residence visa." The research project named "Research on the mismatch between the employment problem of international graduates in Australia and the shortage of skilled workers" is funded by the Australian Research Council and led by Deakin University. It will take three years to explore the employability of overseas graduates in industries with employment gaps-accounting, engineering and nursing.
Gribble said, "We interviewed the international students of the above three majors in three universities-two in Victoria and one in NSW. We interviewed them about their future plans before graduation, and then tried to conduct a follow-up survey for 12 months. We also interviewed employers, industry groups, government officials, scholars and student consultants. "
In addition to permanent residence visa, IELTS score is another major factor that affects employability: those international students who get 8 points in all items are more likely to complete the transformation from students to professionals. In addition, good communication skills and extensive social network and work experience are also very important.
Gribble said, "Most international students have no network and work experience comparable to local students." She said that international students should think about their goals in the first year and recognize the preparations needed to achieve this goal, "in order to improve their employability in Australia." "They should expand their network, and at the same time, perhaps they should lower their expectations and save more work experience in a shorter time."
The researcher said, "Many international students don't seem to realize the importance of work experience. They pay too much attention to their academic performance, because it may be very important in their country. But in Australia, I think the fact is that in addition to holding considerable achievements, you have to have some work experience. "
Gribble said that she understands that some international students are under the pressure of "parents' expectations", but she believes that international students still need to integrate into the local community as much as possible, because this will greatly improve their employment prospects.
