Leon Panetta (1938-), the new Secretary of Defense of the United States. Born in California, the son of Italian immigrants, he received a bachelor's degree in political science and a doctorate in law from Santa Clara University in his early years. He served as director of the Office of Civil Rights in the Nixon administration, White House chief of staff during the Clinton era, member of the House of Representatives, and chairman of the House Budget Committee.
