Resume of Zhou Peiyuan
19 19 was admitted to the High School Attached to Tsinghua University (now the predecessor of Tsinghua University). During his study, he became interested in mathematics and published the article "Two Laws of Angular Trinity", which was praised by Zheng, a professor of mathematics at that time.
1924, graduated from Tsinghua University. In the autumn of the same year, because of his excellent grades, he was sent by Tsinghua University to the United States to continue his college courses and enter the second year of the Department of Mathematics and Science of the University of Chicago. Zhou Peiyuan received his bachelor's degree and master's degree in the spring and summer of 1926 respectively.
65438-0927, Zhou Peiyuan entered California Institute of Technology to continue his postgraduate study. He studied under Bedman at first, and then under E.T. Bell to learn the theory of relativity. The following year, he received a doctorate in science and the highest honor award (highest honor).
/kloc-in the autumn of 0/928, he went to the University of Leipzig, Germany, and studied under Professor W.K. Heisenberg.
1929 went to Zurich Institute of Technology in Switzerland to study quantum mechanics under the leadership of Professor S. Pauli. In the same year, he returned to China and was employed as a professor in the Physics Department of the National Tsinghua University (hereinafter referred to as Tsinghua). He is only 27 years old.
1932, Zhou Peiyuan married Ms. Wang Dicheng and had four daughters. Before retiring, Wang Dicheng had been teaching in the middle school affiliated to Tsinghua University.
1936 to 1937. According to Tsinghua University's vacation regulations, Zhou Peiyuan went to the United States again to study theoretical physics at Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies. In the meantime, I participated in the seminar on general relativity personally presided over by Professor A. Einstein, engaged in the research of relativistic gravity and cosmology.
After the beginning of World War II, the United States was in urgent need of scientific and technological personnel. As soon as the Zhou Peiyuan family entered the country, they received an official invitation from the Immigration Bureau to grant them permanent residency. Zhou Peiyuan laughed it off.
1937, returning home on vacation. Soon, War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression broke out. At the end of July, Ping Jin fell; In August, the Japanese invaders entered the Tsinghua campus. Entrusted by President Mei Yiqi, Zhou Peiyuan arranged for the school to move south. He is a professor in the Physics Department of Changsha Temporary University and Kunming Southwest United University. During this period, he resolutely turned to the study of fluid mechanics with the ambition that scientists should serve the Anti-Japanese War and save the nation with science.
1943 to 1946, Zhou Peiyuan took advantage of the holiday to go to the United States again. He first studied theory of turbulence at California Institute of Technology, and then joined the Naval Military Test Station of the Wartime Scientific Research and Development Bureau of the National Defense Commission of the United States, engaged in the scientific research of torpedo launching.
1945 At the end of World War II, most of the personnel of the torpedo air-launched water research team were retained by the US Admiralty to set up a naval military test station, and Zhou Peiyuan was also invited to stay. Since the experimental station is a research institution of the U.S. government, the candidate should have American citizenship. At that time, Zhou Peiyuan made it clear that he would not become an American citizen and only held a temporary position; The following year, he left the United States to attend international conferences in Europe on behalf of China academic groups. After the relevant parties in the United States accepted the above conditions, he continued to work in the United States for less than one year, and left his post on July 1946 to attend the 300th anniversary of Newton's birth and the Council of the International Union for Science in Europe. He also attended the 6th International Conference on Applied Mechanics held in France, and was elected as a director by this conference and the newly established International theoretical and applied mechanics Federation.
1946 10, Zhou Peiyuan returned to the United States from Europe and returned to Shanghai with his wife and three daughters in February 1947. 1April, 947, he returned to Beiping (now Beijing) and continued to be a professor in Tsinghua University.
After the founding of New China, Zhou Peiyuan successively served as provost of Tsinghua University, deputy director of the school committee, provost of Peking University, vice president and principal, vice president of China Academy of Sciences, president and honorary chairman of China Association for Science and Technology, vice president of World Association for Science and Technology, president and honorary chairman of China International Association for the Promotion of Science and Technology, vice president and honorary chairman of China Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, chairman and honorary chairman of Chinese Physical Society, honorary president of European and American Alumni Association, and vice president of Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs. President of China People's Association for Peace and Disarmament, Chairman of Jiu San Society, First, Second, Third and Fourth NPC deputies, Fifth NPC Standing Committee, Third and Fourth CPPCC Standing Committee, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh CPPCC Vice-Chairman. 1980 received an honorary doctorate in law from Princeton University in the United States, and 1980 and 1985 won the "Outstanding Contributions Alumni" Award from California Institute of Technology twice. 198 1 year, due to his advanced age, Zhou Peiyuan voluntarily resigned as the principal.
Zhou Peiyuan's academic achievements are mainly two important aspects of the basic theory of physics, namely Einstein's gravity theory in general relativity and theory of turbulence's research in fluid mechanics.
