The School of Food Science and Technology of South China Agricultural University is based on the agricultural product storage and processing major founded by Mr. Li Peiwen, a famous fruit and vegetable storage and processing expert and first-level professor in China, and integrates the entire school Regarding the disciplines of food chemistry, microbiology, and agricultural product processing, the Department of Food Science was established in 1994 and restructured into the School of Food in 2001.
The School of Food consists of four departments and a central laboratory: food science, food engineering, bioengineering, and packaging engineering. Safety Basic Laboratory, South China Agricultural University Tropical and Subtropical Food Research Center, South China Agricultural University Food Quality and Safety Research Institute and South China Agricultural University Dairy Factory are affiliated with the School of Food. There are currently 76 faculty members, including 16 professors, 18 associate professors, and 4 senior laboratory technicians. Teachers with a master's degree or above account for 92.3% of the faculty, and 72.3% have a doctorate.
The college engages in multi-level teaching for doctoral and master’s students, international students and undergraduates. It has three second-level doctoral programs in agricultural product processing and storage engineering, food science, and microbiology; the first-level discipline of food science and engineering Master's degree program, food engineering master's degree, food processing and safety agricultural promotion master's degree program; there are four undergraduate majors: food science and engineering, food quality and safety, bioengineering, and packaging engineering. There are currently 2,158 students on campus, including 29 doctoral students, 147 master's students, 12 engineering masters, and 1,960 undergraduate students.
The college actively carries out scientific research work. Since its establishment, the institute has undertaken more than 200 national, provincial, municipal, and horizontal scientific research projects and won 5 national, ministerial, and provincial awards. It has formed three dominant discipline research directions based on chemistry, biology, nutrition, and engineering, namely tropical and subtropical agricultural product processing, food biotechnology, and food quality and safety, as well as two emerging disciplines of food processing new technology and equipment, and packaging engineering. It has obtained The honorary title of a scientific research and teaching institution with outstanding contributions to the food industry in Guangdong Province. It has established scientific research collaboration relationships with more than 100 companies and has become an important teaching, scientific research and talent training base in the fields of agricultural products and food processing in South China.
The college actively carries out foreign exchanges and cooperation, and has established close scientific research and talent training cooperation relationships with the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, Queen's University in the United Kingdom, Kochi University in Japan, Prince of Songkla University in Thailand, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. It has conducted extensive academic exchanges and visits with Washington State University in the United States, Saskatchewan University in Canada, Kyushu University in Japan, Kassetsa University in Thailand, and the University of Hong Kong. It accepts international students from many countries. It is also the first college in the school to send undergraduates to study abroad. .
