Thailand’s full name is the Kingdom of Thailand, formerly known as Siam, located in Southeast Asia. It borders Laos and Cambodia to the east, the Gulf of Siam and Malaysia to the south, and Myanmar and the Andaman Sea to the west. On May 11, 1949, the Thais changed the name of their nation from "Siam" to "Thai", mainly because of its meaning of "freedom". The official language is Thai, using the Thai alphabet, which is considered the mother tongue by about 50 million people. Most Thais believe in Theravada Buddhism, and Buddhists account for more than 90% of the country's population. There are 76 first-level administrative regions in the country, including 75 "prefectures" and the capital Bangkok. Thailand is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and implements liberal economic policies. In the 1990s, Thailand experienced rapid economic growth and became one of the "Four Asian Tigers". Thailand is one of the world's most famous tourist destinations.
