The main differences between Shanghainese and locals:

1. Life activity track: Shanghainese mainly live in urban areas, while locals basically live in suburbs.

Shanghainese grow up in the urban area of Shanghai, and their growth environment is basically completely influenced by the urban residents' environment. Locals are born and raised in the suburbs (people who go to the city usually say "go to Shanghai").

2. Ancestor origin: The ancestors of Shanghainese are basically descendants of immigrants 49 years ago. The ancestors of local people mainly live in the suburbs of Shanghai, and their families generally own homesteads. Their ancestors (more than three generations, mainly suburban counties that moved from Jiangsu Province to Shanghai in the 1950s) were basically people from the suburbs of Shanghai.

3. Common languages: Southern Jiangsu and Southern Zhejiang dialects in Wu dialect area (Shanghai dialect); Songjiang dialect, Jinshan dialect, Chongming dialect, etc (locals).

Shanghainese can speak Shanghainese (in fact, many words are similar in pronunciation to Suzhou dialect and Ningbo dialect). For Shanghainese, dialects from southern Jiangsu and Zhejiang, both from Wu dialect areas, may be relatively better understood. Locals basically speak the regional dialects of suburbs/counties (such as Songjiang dialect, Jinshan dialect and Chongming dialect); Shanghainese can't understand the local dialect.

4. Living environment: Shanghai people have lived in a small area for generations (so-called "Dojo in snail shell"), so when demolition, even if the location is good, the benefits of the houses allocated are not as good as those of local people.
