Nansha Islands and its adjacent waters are located in the southern part of the South China Sea in China, and the sea area ranges from 3 25'-1210' north latitude and10815'-19 00' east longitude. Taiping Island covers an area of about 0.43km2；; The islands with an area greater than 0. 1km2 include Zhongye Island, Xiyue Island, Nanwei Island, Nanzi Island and Beizi Island. Hung Hom Island, with the highest altitude, is only 6.2m2 As early as the Han Dynasty, our people discovered the South China Sea Islands in navigation and production, collectively known as Bantou. In the fifth year of Tang Zhenyuan (789), Nansha Islands named "Wanli Changsha" and "Shitang, Li Qian" were incorporated into Chinese territory, and this area was under administrative jurisdiction in the Song Dynasty.

After the Second World War, according to the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, the China government recovered Taiping Island, the largest island in Nansha Islands, on 1946. At the beginning of 1947, the Local Bureau of the Ministry of Interior of China compiled and published the Location Map of the South China Sea Islands, in which the coastline of the South China Sea (now known as the traditional coastline) of China was represented by nine arc-shaped discontinuous lines for the first time.

1949 after the establishment of People's Republic of China (PRC), it has repeatedly reiterated China's territorial sovereignty over the South China Sea Islands and its surrounding waters. On the administrative map of China, the territorial scope of South China Sea in China is clearly marked in the form of traditional maritime boundary.

Nansha Islands have been the sacred territory of China since ancient times, and have been recognized and widely supported by the international community.

During the period of 1987, UNESCO requested the government of China to set up a permanent marine hydrological observation station in Nansha sea area to provide marine hydrological data for passing ships.

However, since 1968, especially since 1970s, neighboring countries have occupied 44 islands and reefs in Nansha Islands of China, and set up troops, facilities and settlements on some of the islands and reefs occupied by them.

1988, China recovered six reefs, including Jiaojiao, Nanxun Jiaojiao, Dongmen Jiaojiao, Chigua Jiaojiao, Yongshu Jiaojiao and Huahua. 1995, China recovered mischief reef.

The seismic survey in the sea area near Nansha Islands began at 1955, and the drilling started at 1957. The first offshore oil field was found at Temana structure in Balinjian sag at 1962. Up to now, foreign oil companies have completed seismic survey line 122× 104km and drilled 1323 wells (excluding development wells) in Nansha sea area, and have achieved a large number of important oil and gas exploration results, and neighboring countries have gained huge economic benefits from oil and gas development in Nansha sea area.

It can be seen that the Nansha Island reef in China is occupied, the sea area is carved up, resources are plundered and sovereignty is trampled on.

Facing the complicated situation of Nansha Islands, our government advocates that disputes over the territorial and resource rights and interests of Nansha Islands and its sea areas should be resolved by peaceful means within the framework of the United Nations Law of the Sea.
