The Kokang people are authentic Han people. Why don’t people around the world call them Han people?
Kokang, the full name is 'Kokang Autonomous Region in northern Shan State, Myanmar', with the capital Lao Cai City, located on the Shan State Plateau between Myanmar and China, bordering my country's Yunnan Province to the north and east, and the Wa State region to the south It borders the Salween River and Muse City to the west, covering an area of ??about 2,700 square kilometers, and the border with China is 250 kilometers away!
The total population of the Kokang area is about 250,000, 90% of which are Kokang ethnic groups. It is the main inhabited area of ????the Han ethnic group in northern Myanmar. The Kokang area was originally Chinese territory and belonged to Yunnan Province. In 1894, China and Britain signed the China-Myanmar Boundary Treaty, declaring the Kokang area as Chinese territory.
But in 1897, Britain forced China at the time to sign a new border treaty with it, adding Kokang to British Burma. Due to complex historical reasons, when the boundary treaty with New China was signed in 1960, Kokang was not mentioned in it, and the Kokang area was administered by the Shan State of Myanmar. This is caused by historical reasons.
Kokang is a rather special place. The Han population accounts for a relatively large proportion. There is a saying that the Kokang people are Chinese living in Myanmar, but they do not have Chinese nationality!
Although the Kokang people are under the jurisdiction of Myanmar, due to special reasons, they are still different from the indigenous people of Myanmar. For example, the biggest difference is the different types of ID cards. The ID cards of Kokang people are lower than those of Burmese people. Some of them hold white cards, which are the lowest level of ID cards. It gives people the impression that they are divided into three categories. Sixty-nine and so on!
There is another obvious difference between the Chinese in the Kokang area and the Chinese in other places. Most of the people in Kokang only speak one language - Chinese. The Chinese in other parts of Myanmar can speak at least two languages, namely Burmese and Chinese.
Of course, because in recent years, the Myanmar government has also vigorously popularized the teaching of Burmese in the Kokang areas controlled by the Myanmar government. The Kokang people are slowly integrating into Burmese culture. However, due to history and the location of the region, it is impossible for the locals to give up Chinese, at least in a short period of time.
