What is the historical origin of Wenzhou?

The ancient city of Wenzhou was built in the first year of Taining in East Jin Mingdi (AD 323). Wenzhou is named because it is located in Lingnan and Wen Qiao with mild and humid seasons. According to "Wenzhou Prefecture Records", when the city was built, Guo Pu, the magistrate, climbed the Western Hills and looked around the mountains. He said to the local people: "The city is outside the mountain. When it is rich, it will be built on the mountain, but if the enemy does not fight, it will be safe for a long time." So he imitated the position of the Big Dipper and built it on the mountain, so it was called Doucheng. Legend has it that when the city was built, a white deer ran with flowers in its mouth, spit on the wall and turned into a cloud. Ran Ran flew into the sky, and the place where the white deer ran was full of birds and flowers. People call it White Lucheng or Lucheng for good luck!

Wenzhou used to be Ou, where ancestors worked and lived as early as the Neolithic Age. During the Warring States period, it belonged to Yue State, and the Qin Dynasty set up Minzhong County. In the third year of Emperor Huidi of the Han Dynasty, the descendant of Goujian, the king of Yue, was the King of the East China Sea, with Dongou as its capital, so Wenzhou was called "Dongou". In the 3rd year of Emperor Yonghe of Hanshun, Yongning County was established, Yongjia County was established in the first year of Taining in East Jin Mingdi, and Wenzhou County was renamed in the 2nd year of Shangyuan in Tang Gaozong due to its warm climate.

During the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties, the famous Tu people and dignitaries from the Central Plains came one after another, and the Central Plains culture, immigrant culture and local culture blended with each other, which promoted the economic and cultural development of Wenzhou. Guo Pu, a learned man, built a city here. According to legend, the white deer passed by with flowers, so it was called "White Lucheng", and the white deer with flowers became a symbol of Wenzhou.
