What to do if you get sick in Canada

The number of students studying in Canada is increasing, so what should Canadian students do if they get sick? Let’s take a look below! Welcome to read.

What should Canadian international students do if they get sick?

1. Family doctor

As the name suggests, it is a doctor who serves various families. Almost all Canadian families have their own family doctor, but many families of international students and new immigrants often ignore the importance of family doctors. When someone in the family becomes sick or unwell, the first person to contact is the family doctor. Your family doctor can help you with basic patient management. In addition, the family doctor will create a complete personal case file for each family member, listing in detail each person's physical condition, medication use, personal medical history and other information. When the family doctor determines that he cannot treat the patient, he will contact a specialist for further examination or treatment.

2. Specialists

Mainly responsible for various specialties. Generally, family doctors are responsible for contacting specialists and most require an appointment. It is rare to make an appointment directly with a specialist.

3. Clinic

Clinics are generally small in size, usually with only 1-2 doctors and 1-2 nurses. Mainly deals with some common non-emergency conditions. Often patients who go to the clinic do not have their own family doctor. Like family doctors, when a clinic doctor determines that he is unable to treat or examine a patient, he will contact a specialist for further examination or treatment. Some clinics are also willing to create medical records for families.

4. Hospital

Similar to domestic hospitals, you can be hospitalized, get injections and conduct various tests. The hospital also has emergency rooms, but they are limited by the number of doctors and nurses. Unless it is a serious emergency such as bleeding or fracture, you usually have to wait 1-2 hours to see a doctor in the emergency room.

Reminder: In most cases, students deal with family doctors and clinics, so a good family doctor is very important. In addition, when encountering an emergency, do not drive yourself or ask a friend to drive to the hospital emergency room. Be sure to call the emergency number 911 immediately so that you can receive timely treatment.
