Yuzawa City (Akita Prefecture), concluded in 1963; Kushiro City has many immigrants from Yuzawa City.

Yachiyo City (Chiba Prefecture), established in 1982; both cities have bridges with bronze statues.

Tori City (Yamanashi Prefecture) was established in 1992; Makoto Ichi Masuda, a Western painter active in Kushiro City, was born in Tori City.

Tottori City (Tottori Prefecture) was established in 1963; during the Hokkaido reclamation period, the Tottori area of ??Kushiro City was developed by nobles from Tottori.

Established in 1980 by Okayama City (Okayama Prefecture); red-crowned cranes representing the Kushiro area are raised in the Garden Korakuen Garden in Okayama City.

Naga Town (Tokushima Prefecture) was concluded in 2006; it used to be the sister city of Onbetsu Town and Washishiki Town, and continued to sign a friendship agreement after the merger.

Izumi City (Kagoshima Prefecture), established in 1989; is the habitat of bald cranes, and like Kushiro, there are also wild cranes.
