1, teachers. Faculty 132, including China Academy of Sciences 1 person, China Academy of Engineering, 2 chief scientists of "973 Plan" project, 2 distinguished professor of "Furong Scholar Program" of Hunan Provincial People's Government and 9 distinguished professor of "Sublimation Scholar Program" of Central South University. There are about 2500 students in the college, including more than 500 undergraduates/kloc-0, and nearly 1000 postdoctoral, doctoral and master students.

2. Discipline construction. College is the first batch of master's degree, doctor's degree, first-class discipline doctor's degree, engineering doctor's degree and postdoctoral mobile station authorized units in China. It has three national second-class key disciplines: materials science and engineering, materials science, materials physics and chemistry and materials processing engineering. It has 6 doctoral programs in 2 disciplines, including material science, material processing engineering, material computing science and virtual engineering, new energy and electronic information nano-materials and devices, and advanced inorganic materials science and engineering.

3. Educational facilities. The college has secondary institutions such as materials department, materials processing engineering department, materials physics department, materials chemistry department and experiment center, and more than 10 scientific research institutes. The State Key Laboratory of Powder Metallurgy and the State Key Laboratory of Lightweight and High Strength were jointly established with the Institute of Powder Metallurgy, and the State Key Laboratory of Nonferrous Metal Materials Science and Engineering of the Ministry of Education and the Key Laboratory of Nonferrous and Rare Metal Materials Science and Engineering of Hunan Province were owned.

The School of Materials Science and Engineering of Central South University was formerly known as the Department of Metal Technology, and was renamed as the Department of Special Metallurgy and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 1962 and 1980 respectively. In 2002, the College of Materials Science and Engineering was formally established.

The college has made remarkable achievements in teaching reform, curriculum construction and personnel training, winning 3 second prizes for national teaching achievements, 4 national excellent courses and 3 first prizes for provincial and ministerial teaching achievements. The postdoctoral mobile station of materials science and engineering was rated as national excellent. Published 15 textbooks, and nearly 20 monographs and auxiliary textbooks, including National Book Award 1 book, National Excellent Science and Technology Book Award 1 book, National Excellent Textbook 1 book, and Provincial Excellent Textbook 1 book.
