Extended reading: IELTS reading scoring standard

(a) Introduce the structure of the colloquium

To judge the category of an article, you can generally look at the title. Introductory articles describe or introduce something or phenomenon, so the title is usually a noun phrase or a question starting with How. The specific structure is as follows:

Introduce a phenomenon or fact.

Detailed description:

Timeline/Different Aspects/Logical Development

Looking to the future/summing up

No matter what the article is, the first paragraph always leads to the theme, so we often introduce phenomena, facts or problems in descriptive language.

In introductory expository writing, discontinuity is a description of the details of things, and various topics can be developed in three different ways. The first kind of time series is usually used to state a historical event, such as? Johnson? S dictionary? That's the kind. The second kind of juxtaposition or progression, introduced from all sides, such as the fourth sword? What do whales feel? As soon as you look at the title, you will know that it introduces all kinds of feelings of whales and belongs to a parallel structure. The third category is logical order. According to the author's statistics, most environmental and natural articles follow this order, which will be commented in detail below, so I won't repeat them here.

(B) the structure of argumentative essays

(1) experimental articles

Introduction experiment

Pre-experiment (subjects, tools, methods)

Experimental process

Results (data collection)

Analysis and synthesis

In IELTS reading, the structure of the experimental article is the most fixed. Did the author analyze it? Kenji? And then what? Kengo? In all the experimental articles, it is found that their structures follow the above routine, because the form of experimental reports is monotonous. The first paragraph always explains the origin and purpose of the experiment, and then introduces the preparatory work before the experiment, including instruments and experimental objects. Then enter the description of the experimental process, publish the experimental results, and finally draw a conclusion by synthesizing the data. No matter what experiment you do, this basic order will not change.

(2) Logical argument class structure

Introduce a topic/question

Literature review (optional)

Current reason/reason (optional)

A writer? the method of

Supporting evidence

conclusion

This kind of article is closer to the paper in structure. The first paragraph leads to the topic, the second part summarizes the literature on the topic, introduces the existing viewpoints or discusses the causes of the problems, the third part introduces the author's judgment and related arguments or arguments, and finally draws a conclusion. This kind of article is usually difficult in the IELTS test.

(3). Practical application

The application of structured reading will be explained in detail in the following topics.

Example 1 (? Kengo? P 16, Johnson? Dictionary)

As soon as you look at the title, you will know that it is an explanatory article with the theme of introducing Dr. Johnson's dictionary. Then look at the specific broken structure, pay attention to the first sentence and the last sentence. The first sentence of the first paragraph? People have been worried about the present situation of English. ? Explain the background, explain the problems existing in English language, and lead to the theme of dictionary compilation. The first sentence of the second paragraph? Of course, there used to be dictionaries, too? Through the introduction of old dictionaries, we can see that the structure of this paper is arranged in chronological order. Grasp this point and the rest of the paragraph will be easy to analyze. The necessity of compiling a dictionary, the preparation before compiling a dictionary, the difficulties in compiling a dictionary, the introduction of the work results, the praise after publication, Johnson's feelings and his final success are described in turn. Grasp this order, even if the following T/F/NG questions are not in the right order, each question can still be located accurately and quickly. Limited to space, here are a few examples. Question 9? Johnson became more famous after his death. ? This sentence is related to the aftermath, and it must have been found in the last paragraph in chronological order. Question 10? Johnson has been planning to write a dictionary for several years. In chronological order, this sentence should be in the fourth paragraph, because that paragraph is about the preparatory stage of compiling a dictionary.

Example 2 (? Kengo? P20, congenital or acquired)

First of all, it can be judged by the first sentence that it is an experimental article. Read the first sentence of each paragraph and sort out the structure: paragraph A leads to the experiment and explains the purpose of the experiment. The preparation work before the experiment is introduced in paragraph B. Section c experimental process. The experimental results of D and E stages, the experimental analysis of F, G and H stages, and the last stage of synthesis draw a conclusion. Look at the collocation questions in the following paragraphs. 14 the experimental results are analyzed from the biological point of view, which are found in paragraphs f, g and h. From the first sentence, it can be judged that paragraph f talks about animal aggression, paragraph g talks about sociality, paragraph h talks about human nature and morality, and animal aggression is closest to biology, so paragraph f is chosen. 15 talks about the purpose of the experiment, so choose paragraph A, 16 talks about the theme of the experiment, so choose paragraph B, and the rest of the questions can be done in the same way, so I won't repeat them here.

Structure of articles on environmental natural phenomena

Introduce the phenomenon

cause

Impact or influence brought by information technology

Solutions/Looking to the Future

The theme of the article is usually some phenomena, such as earthquakes and volcanoes. The first paragraph introduces the phenomenon and its causes, the following paragraphs talk about the consequences, introduce how human beings respond, and finally look forward to the future. For example,? Kengo? P86? What is the impact of wilderness tourism? Discuss outdoor tourism, and the theme belongs to the environmental category. According to this structure, even if you don't read the article, you should be able to judge that topic iii (fragile areas and the reasons for the expansion of tourism there) is selected in section A, and then the consequences are discussed by analogy with section B, so you should choose V because there are? Destructive effects? Section c discusses countermeasures, so choose ii.

In short, we should analyze the structure of the article and understand the composition and theme of each paragraph before doing the problem. This is not only an effective test-taking strategy, but also a good reading method of academic articles. This is just some experience in reading skills since I taught IELTS. I hope to attract more attention and discuss IELTS reading skills and strategies with you.
