The Historical Evolution of Sanyu Town

Sanyu, located in the coastal area of Nantong, is the last land in Nantong and the youngest town. Most residents are immigrants from Haimen, Qidong and Chongming. With the sediment deposition in the middle and late Qing Dynasty and the sea moving eastward, the salt-producing areas in Tongzhou moved eastward year by year from the original Shigangchang, Xitingchang and Jinshachang in the middle, and concentrated in Yuxi and Yudongchang. Yuxi field is located about to the west of Sanyu Vertical River today, including Hengxing; The location of the fish cave field is about east of today's Sanyu Vertical River. During Guangxu and Xuantong years, wall (salt) merchants such as Guangyun stove, Tongxing stove, Hengxin stove and Tuozao appeared in Yuxi market, such as Yu Hexiang and Yuan Henry. There are Li Zao, Wang Zao, Long Xing Zao, Jinling Gong Dang, Qu Si Dang, Pan Jidun and so on. In Yudong Farm, salt merchants accumulated smoothly and enjoyed a good reputation. These salt merchants and stove households control a large area of land in the saltworks, which is used to produce grass firewood for burning salt. Salt was an important material of the country at that time, and salt tax was one of the important tax sources of the country. The method of making salt is very old and the cost is very high. In the second year of the Republic of China (1913), on February 24th, Zhang Jian, Zhang Yan and others, in the name of Dayoujin, raised 654.38+ten thousand yuan to buy Changji Shengfeng and Dechang Houbao Garden in Yudong. In March, Dayoujin Salt Industry Company was formally established, and a few months later, Yuhexiang and Yuanhengli Baoyuan in Yuxi were acquired. This is a joint-stock company engaged in reclamation under the guidance of salt industry, which was called one of the major joint-stock companies in China during the Beiyang government period by relevant experts. In the early days, Dayoujin Company was mainly engaged in land acquisition, survey and zoning, damming, water storage and desalination, and grass planting. The company's office is located in the center of the reclamation area-public security (this is the later place name). In the third year of the Republic of China (19 14), on August 22nd, Yudongchang 100 salt people set fire to the office of Dayoujin Company, killing its employees Wang Gongsan and Li Anfu, and the parties concerned were punished accordingly. This is the famous "burning company" incident. After the incident, the local people named it "Public Security". At the end of the year, Dayoujin Company's headquarters was located in Yantang, a company in Sanyu District, with an area of 100 mu to build Sanyu Town. From 19 14 to 192 1, Sanyu Town starts from the infrastructure of Dayoujin Corporation. There are 48 bungalows, back room 10, market room 172 (facade and drop-off room), small food market, police station, patrol room, warehouse, primary school, saltworks and other infrastructure. From June of the sixth year of the Republic of China (19 17), the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Finance approved the establishment and operation of grain, bricks and tiles, wood, cottonseed and other items in Sanyu Town. Dayoujin Company attached great importance to the continuation and consolidation of land at the beginning of its establishment, because it was beneficial to planning and water conservancy construction. Sanyuqu Company is located in the southwest corner of Yujin Reclamation Area (its scope is today's Yishe, Yongxing, Zhendong, Xinnan and Xinmin Village). It was formed by the company's acquisition of Sanyi Township in Yudong Market and Yuzhong Township in Yuxi Market, ranking first among the two townships. Sanyu Town has replaced Dayoujin Company, but its scope does not include Zhong Yi and some areas of Beixingqiao, while jindong district and Dadong District of Dayoujin Company are included in Haimen.
