1974 After Hurricane Tracy, the total population of the Northern Territory decreased greatly, but it recovered to around 169298 in 1993. The main population centers are Darwin, Alice Springs, Newland Bay, Catherine and Tennant Creek. By the end of June 2007, the total population was 2 15000, and most of the residents were descendants of European immigrants. More than a quarter of the population in the Northern Territory are aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, far higher than other Australian states and territories, and closely related to the ethnic groups in the South Pacific Island.
