Real small town America
There are many small towns in the United States. Most Americans like to live in small towns. They make up the majority of American voters, and their children make up the bulk of the U.S. military. Each small town often has its own culture passed down from generation to generation. These cultures are not New York culture, Chicago culture, or Los Angeles culture, they are American culture. This kind of culture is not a kind of narrow competition, not a kind of abyss knowledge, nor an endless ambition, but a kind of contented generosity, contentment and elation, plus some mountain villager-style romance.
In fact, most ordinary Americans who don’t go on TV and read newspapers live like this. American small town culture represents American culture, at least, it represents a large part of American culture. Next, I will introduce the small town culture in the United States. The town I want to talk about is called "Water Pier Town". It's the town where I live. There is a profound history and unique rural culture here. The politics, culture and education in this small town constitute a style that is completely different from that in big American cities. This small town is one of countless small towns in the United States. The people and things in this small town are the stories of ordinary Americans. It can be regarded as the customs and customs, or it can be regarded as humanities and history. I feel that to understand American culture, I should probably start by getting to know these ordinary Americans. And because I got to know them, I had some thoughts about our own culture. An inch is long and a foot is short. The experience of living in these small town cultures is actually very interesting. If there is a conflict between different cultures here, the conflict is mitigated, although it is often very profound.
By studying small town culture in the United States, we can see some human similarities and differences rooted in different cultures.
1. The "Parent Officer" of Waterford
Waterford is a small town in the northwest corner of Pennsylvania, not far from Lake Irie . Lake Irie is the most dishonest of the five Great Lakes. It can produce heavy snow and ice for half of the year. The shores of Lake Ire are called the "Belt of Ice and Snow". The water pier is a small lock on the "ice and snow belt" drawn by Lake Irie. When it snows heavily, the "little lock" becomes invisible. This "little lock" is so small, so small that there is only a traffic light standing alone in the heavy snow. It opens its red eyes and then its green eyes, boredly guarding the only short street in the town.
However, if anyone wants to ignore "Water Dock Town" from the map of the United States, I am afraid that the history of the United States will not be what it is today. Water Pier is the starting point of a period of history, and more than three hundred years later, it still maintains the original appearance of that starting point. People in Shui Pier don't like change or innovation. The people of Water Pier cherish the history they once had and still maintain.
The councilors of the Water Pier Council are firmly opposed to the opening of a McDonald's fast food restaurant or any supermarket, not even Seven11, on their only short street. Over the years, the proposal to open a fast food restaurant has been rejected time and time again. There is a sturdy and quaint red brick restaurant called "Eagle Hotel" at Water Pier. The "Eagle Restaurant" is square and square. It sells good salmon and cheese desserts. It is closed every Monday. People from Shui Pier entertained guests, and wedding banquets all went to the "Eagle Hotel". The "Eagle Hotel" is enough. Letting the "Eagle Restaurant" compete with McDonald's seems to the people of Shui Pier to be selling out their traditional culture.
On the right side of the "Eagle Hotel" is a row of antique shops, pawn shops, pharmacies and other small shops; on the left side is the essence of the town of Water Pier: a green sign and a statue of Washington. The green sign read: "In December 1753, George Washington came here with a notice from the Governor of Virginia [British] to the French soldiers, informing the French that they were entering the British territory. According to records, Washington completed his first public mission."
The water dock was Washington's first step into the public. Although he did not represent the United States in 1753, the United States was still a British colony at that time. He came to the water pier to represent Britain and deal with the French who were stationed nearby at that time. But he is already Washington. It is said that he ate at the "Eagle Hotel".
The people at Water Pier clean this first "step" in Washington every year to prevent the dust of the times from contaminating history. Every spring, after the snow melts, the "parent officials" of Shui Pier Town will order a cannon to be brought out and set up across the road from the "Eagle Hotel", and the men will be asked to put on British military uniforms from three hundred years ago. I walked up and down the short streets and patrolled like Washington did. The little children followed behind, holding out their bellies, lifting their legs, and waving their arms, imitating their father's example. When they grow up, they will do the same thing. Although there are probably no more than three people who come to Shui Pier every year to recall this period of history. But the people of Shui Pier live their own history, not the history for others to see. They are confident and stubborn. Whether there are outsiders involved or not is not important to them.
There is a large lake at the water pier, which still uses its French name, Lake Lobauf. The lake is beautiful, like a quiet big girl. In winter, the "Big Girl" turns into the "Ice Beauty", and countless gray Canadian geese spend the winter on the Ice Beauty's silver cloak.
The "Ice Beauty" has a beautiful "skirt" floating around her waist, and that "skirt" is the "French Creek". Many residents of the water dock live along the stream. When the weather warms up, the French creek blooms like a romantic willow blown by the spring breeze. The green water widens, becomes brighter, and becomes charming and pleasant under people's eyes. At this time, the hearts of people on the water dock will become green with the spring water, and they will jump like dragonflies resting unsteadily on the water, and they will want to "slip, please" and run around. Therefore, the first political meeting of Shui Pier Town every year was held at this time. The person presiding over the political hearing is the Shui Pier Township Councilor. They are the "parent officials" of the residents of Water Pier.
