What functions does the Three Gorges Hydropower Station have?

The Three Gorges Hydropower Station is the largest hydropower station in the world and the largest construction project in China. However, many problems caused by it, such as immigration, environment and so on, have been accompanied by great controversy since the moment it started construction. The Three Gorges Hydropower Station has more than ten functions such as shipping, power generation and planting. The Three Gorges Hydropower Station was approved by the National People's Congress of China in 1992 and officially started construction in 1994. On the afternoon of June 1 2003, water storage and power generation began, and it was fully completed in 2009.

The unit equipment is mainly provided by VGS joint venture company composed of Voith, General Electric and Siemens and Alstom joint venture company composed of Alstom and ABB. When signing the supply agreement, they all promised to transfer the related technology to the domestic motor manufacturers in China free of charge. The power transmission and transformation system of Three Gorges Hydropower Station is built and managed by State Grid Corporation of China. It is expected to install 15 500 kV high-voltage transmission lines to connect to the regional power grid.

The dam elevation of Three Gorges Hydropower Station is185m, the water storage elevation is175m, the reservoir is more than 600km long, with a total investment of 95.46 billion yuan, and 32 hydropower units with a single capacity of 700,000 kilowatts are installed. The last hydropower unit of the Three Gorges Power Station was put into operation on July 4th, 20 12, which means that the Three Gorges Hydropower Station with an installed capacity of 22.4 million kilowatts became the largest hydropower station and clean energy production base in the world on July 4th, 20 12.
