How strict is the British immigration policy?
According to a parliamentary report, most China students are dissatisfied with the British government's immigration policy, and 95% of the respondents believe that "the policy needs to be changed".
The report was written by Kelly Liang and edited by Barry Gardiner, Alex Yip, Frank Leung and Hou, Chairman and Members of the Inter-Party Committee on China Affairs (APPCGB) of the British Parliament. The opinion polls and research results used in the report were provided by the British Chinese Project.
Barry Gardiner said that China students account for 30% of international students studying in the UK, which is an "important minority".
The report interviewed 988 China students studying in different universities in Britain. Questions include the experience of studying abroad and college life. 96% of the students surveyed believe that they want to see "student activity plans with better design and cultural background" to help them "better adapt to the living and learning environment in Britain".
69% of the respondents said that they were "victims of serious crimes" or "someone around them was unfortunately involved in crimes", but only 40% reported the case for help. China students in Nottingham, leicester city, Coventry or Birmingham suffered a higher proportion.
The report found that nearly 50% of the students interviewed said that they had been subjected to racial discrimination, including indecent slang with xenophobic colors, discriminatory abuse, unfair treatment and so on. Despite this, nearly 80% (79%) people said that they want to stay in the UK after graduation, and student visa restrictions are the reason to prevent them from staying in the UK. According to the current regulations, international students leave Britain almost immediately after graduation. Many interviewees said that student visas are so demanding on the length of stay that people can't even attend their graduation ceremony.
A recent graduate interviewed said, "The tuition fee for studying in the UK is a lot of money. After graduation, the British government will kick me out like a criminal immediately. I felt helpless when I left and was used. "
90% of the respondents said that if the British government's policy on international students remains unchanged, more China students will choose other countries instead of Britain for further study. According to the report, various restrictions imposed by the immigration policy are the main reasons for China students to "leave immediately" after completing their studies (62%). Another 29% of the respondents said that they didn't stay because of cultural and language differences, and 23% of the respondents thought that they had better career prospects in China.
"It is very important that we can't completely blame the university." Barry Gardiner said, "China students are a relatively conservative group. The data may only reflect part of the actual problem. "
The report suggests that the government should relax its immigration policy and recommend a series of policies, including "strengthening the investigation of crimes committed by overseas students in China", "improving visa services" and "more assistance between different institutions".
