What kind of food is there in Africa?
In South Africa, the most common food is something called Biltong. The so-called Biltong means dried meat. The natives of Africa stalk wild beasts and can travel for days at a time. During this period of time, the only thing used to survive was this kind of dried meat. They look like long strips, like shriveled bananas, and are black.
Any meat can be used to make Biltong, the most common ones are beef, mutton, and ostrich meat, but the most delicious meat is Kudo, which is also the softest.
Other meat is so hard that you can’t chew it for a long time. Maybe this is also a life-saving scam, so that the natives don’t think they will starve to death. It is very effective when hunting and migrating to water sources.
There are Biltong specialty stores everywhere, hanging dried meat outside the stalls to attract customers. Nowadays, this kind of food is not only loved by the natives, but also liked by all South African residents, whether white or black. Except Hong Kong people, they think it’s dirty and won’t eat it.
The meat is dried and left to dry in the wind and sun without being refrigerated or packaged. It makes sense that people with weak stomachs would not dare to touch it.
When I got here, the first thing I did was to buy some and try it out. First buy it in a supermarket or a small gas station store. It is made by a large group and is well packaged. The pieces of meat look very hygienic. After trying it for the first time, I thought it tasted good, not as hard as expected, and more civilized than chewing chewing gum.
I became interested in eating it and went to a specialty store to buy it. I tried all kinds of dried meat. It was much better than those produced by big groups. The specialty store also sells a wooden stand with a giant blade that looks like a cutter of Chinese medicinal materials. Long strips of hard meat are difficult to cut without this kind of knife.
Looking for this flavor again, I saw the famous steakhouse Butcher also had strips of meat hanging on it, so I asked the master chef to slice it. The old man had good knife skills and sliced ??the meat very thinly, which reminded me of Jinhua ham slices from Hong Kong's "Rong Fung".
Compared with Jinhua ham, the taste is of course very different.
But if you asked me to choose Taiwanese beef jerky or African Biltong, I would rather choose the latter. It’s hard to describe the taste if you haven’t tried it. If you are interested, please try it when you go to South Africa. Maybe you will be addicted like me. Maybe.
