abstract
In 2005, Fengjie, China.
Painter Liu Xiaodong went to the Three Gorges area to create the oil painting Hotbed. 12 demolition workers became his sketch models. This 2000-year-old city is about to disappear due to the construction of the Three Gorges Project, and painters are conquered by reality in their relationship with models.
Bangkok, Thailand, 2006.
The second part of Hotbed was held in Bangkok. Liu Xiaodong invited 12 tropical women to sketch for them. The hot city makes women sleepy, but the fruits on the ground are still bright. Painters are getting more and more tired because of physical exertion, but women break their eyes and sing cheerful songs.
Both cities have rivers that pass by and will never look back.
Production introduction
At the end of 2002, Liu Xiaodong traveled to the Three Gorges and saw the Three Gorges County, which was being relocated, and his creative ideas sprouted. Until the outbreak of SARS in 2003, Liu Xiaodong created the first oil painting about the Three Gorges-Three Gorges Immigrants (200cm×800cm).
In the second half of 2005, Liu Xiaodong and Jia went to the Three Gorges together, and created the oil painting Hotbed and the documentary East featuring Liu Xiaodong.
Jia on "East"
First, why did you shoot "East"
First of all, this film was not made because of the Three Gorges, but because Xiaodong wanted to paint, so he invited me to make a documentary. I was very curious about his working state, how he started to work there, and how he faced the people in the painting. I have never been to the Three Gorges, but I fell in love with his paintings for the first time. I also became interested in that place and went with him. This documentary is about his paintings to express his feelings about this place. Xiaodong chose this place for his reasons. It's disappearing and everything is changing. This person is here today, and this person may not be here tomorrow. He may leave or die. All these things are flowing and changing. Xiaodong is basically running when he is creating, such as competing with light. There is a building behind the place where he chose to paint. If he doesn't paint soon, the sun will soon be blocked. At the work site, I gradually entered the world of so-called painters.
What moved me was not his choice of the Three Gorges, a place of great changes, but his love for life itself and people themselves. In Xiaodong's place, he faced the same person-the relocated households. What he expresses is a kind of beauty that can only be presented in this particular group of people. You will feel that his heart is full of feelings for his characters. This is the place that moved me most during this trip to the Three Gorges.
Second, why use "East" as the title?
I am also an art lover. I have always wanted to discover the "secret" in his painting world. Looking back at some of his previous paintings now, we will find that he has an unchanging bright spot, that is, the people in each painting have their own beautiful life. Words like "realism" and "realism" cannot sum up the meaning of his works. He has the most direct love for the object itself and life, which is very natural and primitive. In today's society where packaging has lost its true colors, it is very rare. My documentary is called "Oriental", and there is a word in the name. It also hints at our position and attitude.
Third, why cooperate with Liu Xiaodong?
It is natural to work together, based on the so-called artistic point of view, and the so-called feelings about the works are quite consistent. The people in my movies are all ordinary people walking in the street, and the people in Xiaodong paintings are also the most ordinary ordinary people. But they have their beauty, which is an innate beauty. Why do you like these people? Facing these people, how to express their living conditions is a problem that we have to think about. People living in the Three Gorges have poor economic and living conditions. People live on that river. After moving, their future life may not be settled, but as far as everyone is concerned, they will let us find that happiness can not be completely measured by money. We met some people whose lives were still very active. They don't have much depression, pain and hesitation. People live well, and they are happy to earn one dollar and two dollars. It's really good.
After our entire film crew came back, many people missed the feeling of being in the Three Gorges very much. Finding the initial happiness is the most important process. For example, I don't care how this film will be released in the future, how many people like it and how far it can spread. Because the main happiness has passed, just like giving birth to a child, you cherish a life, and you are happy to watch him grow up, but what you miss most is the initial love and production process. When I came back, I found myself very stable and felt that life was actually good enough for you!
Liu Xiaodong on "East"
First, why do you want to draw the Three Gorges?
I'm always afraid-I feel like I've become something, and then I've become a sissy. So I am always willing to belittle myself and make myself less important and self-righteous. Only when an artist has some connection with local life can his works be fresher and more powerful. If I don't go to the Three Gorges, I may go to other similar places. In Beijing, many people pay attention to it. As a painter, I feel a little useful, such as exhibitions, interviews, books ... but when I face the Three Gorges and those small counties that are about to be submerged, you will feel that you are useless and vain things have no meaning. At this time, you will rethink many problems. If art is always presented as a sacrifice in the sacred temple, that person will become empty. In the Three Gorges, art is not as valuable as mattresses! No more useful than a mattress! We can't change anything and have no influence on others. I want to lower myself and not take myself too seriously. I went to the Three Gorges several times to express my concern and feelings about the fate of the Three Gorges people, not just to describe and record the reality.
Second, the feeling of cooperation with Jia
I think people engaged in film and television art are more interesting. Their ideas are generally active, and there are always some novel and vivid ideas, so I like being with them. But it's really hard to make a movie. Jia filmed from 5 am to 3 am. He really likes this profession too much. If it were me, I would have collapsed. Because he has to deal with not only artistic problems, but also too many ideas for him to decide.

Introduction to Liu Xiaodong's hotbed of painting
Hotbed is a painting project completed by artist Liu Xiaodong from 2005 to 2006. The project is divided into three parts. The first part was completed around Kuishan Mountain in the Three Gorges in September 2005. During this period, Liu Xiaodong made a scene sketch of 12 farmer model invited from the local area. The second part will be completed in Tang Gallery in Bangkok, Thailand in 2006. During this period, the artist will invite 12 Thai women to sketch and exhibit in the Tang Dynasty Gallery in Thailand. In the third part, two works and their scenes will participate in the Sydney Biennale.
The hotbed project focuses on the ongoing urbanization process and immigration tide in Asia. The explosive growth of the world population and hundreds of millions of immigrants from rural areas are creating giant cities on the earth. On a global scale, urbanization, that is, the process of rural to urban migration, has profound economic reasons, but it also creates a unique cultural landscape. Since 1993, China has planned to implement the resettlement in the Three Gorges reservoir area, which not only belongs to this worldwide wave of resettlement, but also has a different passive resettlement mode from other immigrants. Moreover, a brand-new Three Gorges Reservoir will be born at the same time when the homes in the immigrant reservoir area are flooded. This 2 1 century superhero is not only the direct beneficiary of China's cross-century immigrants, but also will spare no effort to defend China, which is developing rapidly in the process of urbanization. Unlike China, Thailand's immigration situation is active immigration driven by economic interests. In this project, Liu Xiaodong continued his humanistic concern for the Asian reality in the process of modernization through painting. The artist tries to reflect the migration tide in Asia through symmetrical images.
There are 2 groups of works in the hotbed project, 5 pieces in each group, and they are displayed in 2 groups, all of which are 250cm×250cm in size. The content of the work also consists of two parts. One group is the artist's on-site sketch of the local farmers in Kuimen, Three Gorges; The other group is a live sketch of artists in Bangkok, Thailand. The biggest difference between these works and Liu Xiaodong's previous works is that they are all sketches on the spot, without any means of image reproduction such as photography and video recording. In addition to humanistic thinking on the wave of immigration, the hotbed project will also be a contest between hand-painted and mechanical reproduction. According to the artist's own words, he chose this creative way of paying attention to the process of urbanization and the wave of immigrants, in order to "bring the dead paintings back to life, refuse photography, video and other scientific and technological means, and attempt to go back to the past and record the happy time of the world with hand-drawing."
