Where do you speak Shanghainese?
1. Shanghai at most, of course. I used to live in Hong Kong, and some old people in Hong Kong spoke Shanghainese (many wealthy businessmen in Shanghai fled to Hong Kong during the war, but now most of them only speak Shanghainese). There are specialized courses in Shanghai dialect in Japan, as well as many tutorials and books on Shanghai dialect. Shanghai dialect is an independent language in Japan. There are also Shanghai immigrants and students from all over the world. Shanghai dialect and the languages of surrounding cities belong to Wu dialect, so they are similar, especially Jiaxing (like old Shanghai dialect).
The most prosperous period of Shanghainese is the old Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II, Japanese immigrants and American Jewish refugees also spoke fluent Shanghainese.
