The roads in Hong Kong are so narrow, why are there no traffic jams?

My goal for 2019 is to take my baby to Ocean Park in Hong Kong, and I have fulfilled my promise to my baby in these two days.

Hong Kong has a very high density of land and buildings, which is rare in the world. But what impressed me most was the traffic in Hong Kong. Hong Kong traffic has 7 characteristics:

1: Many roads are located in the narrow gaps in the jungle of high-rise buildings, and the distance between buildings can be described as terrifyingly narrow, some of which are only 3-5 meters.

2: The cars on the road drive very fast, especially the main roads.

3: ?The roads are very narrow and there is little greening.

4: There are many intersections with crosswalks.

5: There are few traffic police to maintain order.

6: Hong Kong will not give up seats. No matter if you are in front of a gray-haired old man or a swaddling baby, they will not let you go.

7: There are many people on the sidewalk. Many people are walking with mobile phones and navigation.

Because of this, what is surprising is that in an environment with many people, many cars, narrow roads, and fast speeds, there are very few traffic jams, and there are also very few pedestrians crossing the road at will and driving against traffic jams. The driver! ! ! This is unimaginable in any mainland city.

So, with such a narrow road and so many vehicles, why is there no traffic jam in Hong Kong?

1. Most roads are one-way. One-way lanes not only save land, but also avoid traffic jams caused by vehicles competing for lanes on two-way lanes in the mainland. Furthermore, although the road surface is not wide, Hong Kong's traffic arteries are lined with viaducts and highways. Most of the viaducts are designated as one-way roads (still very narrow). Each viaduct has undergone accurate traffic calculations. There are so many two- and three-story roads. , filling the shortcomings of narrow roads on the ground.

2. Public transportation is very mature and private cars are controlled. Hong Kong's public transportation is recognized as one of the best cities in the world, and the public transportation rate has reached 90%. Hong Kong has public transportation such as subways, trams, buses, etc. that extend in all directions. Citizens and tourists can choose conveniently. The current number of private cars in Hong Kong is said to be only 1 for every 20 people, which is a relatively low ratio. In order to effectively use roads and encourage citizens to choose public transportation, the Hong Kong government has adopted measures such as imposing high initial registration taxes, collecting license fees, levying fuel taxes, increasing parking fees, and increasing undersea tunnel tolls to restrict private cars. Against this background, most Hong Kong people, including government officials, do not often travel by car.

3. There are no non-motorized lanes. There are no bicycles, electric vehicles, and very few motorcycles on Hong Kong's roads.

4. Scientific and reasonable municipal facilities. Most shopping malls in Hong Kong are connected by promenades, often with an overpass spanning more than 10 shopping malls. There is no need to cross the street to go shopping. In addition to shopping malls, there are also some office buildings near traffic arteries with sky corridors connected to them. Such corridors are densely distributed and extend in all directions. In addition, Hong Kong’s underground pedestrian passages also divert some pedestrians from the road.

5. Hong Kong people have a very strong awareness of obeying traffic rules. Even if there are no cars late at night, people will wait patiently for the green light to pass. During the day, it is more difficult to see people and cars running red lights, and they will not even leave. Crossing the road on the sidewalk will also be "despised". When taking a taxi in Hong Kong, no matter which intersection you arrive at, as long as the light is green, the taxi driver will not slow down because he does not have to worry about pedestrians coming out suddenly. On roads without traffic lights, if there are pedestrians ahead, the driver will slow down and wave. Let pedestrians pass first.

Note: It is very convenient to go to Shenzhen West Kowloon from Guangzhou and Hong Kong’s high-speed rail. Shenzhen-Hong Kong, only 15 minutes away. It is very convenient to go to Disney and Ocean Park.
