Chen's investigation

Chen, a Chinese-American professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey, USA, received a research grant from the Federal Ministry of Justice, and spent two years interviewing 149 Chinese-American "sex workers" in ten cities in the United States and Asian countries to get first-hand information. He found that "making quick money" was the main purpose of these women going abroad for prostitution.

He pointed out that the biggest finding of this survey report is that most women in the United States and China engage in prostitution not out of compulsion, but voluntarily. "This conclusion is different from what the State Council and the Federal Ministry of Justice have always thought, which surprised them and made them crazy."

30,000 Asian girls are sold to the United States every year.

Chen said that according to agency statistics, 50,000 girls are trafficked to the United States every year, including 30,000 Asian girls. He has been engaged in transnational crime research for 20 years, and found that human trafficking is worth studying, so he designed a survey to study the situation of China women going abroad for prostitution.

In 2006, this survey received a research grant of 285,000 yuan from the National Institute of Justice under the Federal Ministry of Justice, and he chose new york and Los Angeles, where Chinese people live on the east and west coasts of the United States, as the focus of the survey. In Greater new york, he chose new york's Chinatown, Flushing, amherst, Midtown Manhattan and some cities in New Jersey. Los Angeles chooses local Chinese communities, such as San Gabriel Valley.

He said that "sex workers" in Los Angeles are more alert than their counterparts in new york. They first asked him where he was and if he had a car, and then told him how to drive. She told me to turn left a few blocks, and then turn right a few blocks, without telling me the address. After driving to that street, the other party asked him if he had seen a street. After I told them, they asked me to drive to a certain street. In this way, you have to call two or three times every time you find someone. "The other party is to test whether the guest is really a hacker."

In fact, the person he often looks for is upstairs opposite. When I drive to the designated place, they will see it from the opposite building. If they don't want to see this guest, just ignore him; If they want to answer, they will come down and take the guests upstairs. He said there were large apartment complexes and hundreds of rooms for rent. "They rent a house inside and come out to solicit customers."

These women are more careful. In order not to scare them, he didn't use a notebook and a tape recorder in the interview. I designed more than 50 questions, memorized them, then asked them one by one, kept the answers in mind, and went back to the hotel as soon as possible to write them on the form.

Chen said that he came into contact with "sex workers" as a guest, so "sex workers" also treated him as a guest. His strategy is to find these interviewers, tell them that they are professors, engage in research on this topic, only interview without "doing things" and pay at the standard price. Some people will promise to be interviewed, others will refuse his request and push him out of the door.

Generally speaking, after he entered the room, the other party asked him, "Do you want to take a bath?" After he answered "no", the other party immediately undressed. At this moment, he said "please wait a moment" and told her his intention. If he agrees to be interviewed, he will talk to the other party and pay by the time. Others suspect that his police or FBI detectives have repeatedly conducted tests.

Without skills and knowledge, it is not easy to make money.

Chen Faxian's "making quick money" is the main reason why China women go abroad for prostitution. He pointed out that some women in China have no skills and knowledge, and it is not easy to make money in other industries, but they can make a lot of money in this industry. So many women who want to "make quick money" go to sea.

He said that the fees charged by "sex workers" in new york and Los Angeles are similar. Women in Chinatown are older, and the asking price is around 80 yuan every time. In other places, it is generally 100 yuan each time. If you do business in China, the charge is between 80 yuan and 150 yuan. But China's "sex workers" in midtown Manhattan specialize in foreigners' business, and the price has jumped from 300 yuan. Most of the' sex workers' who do business abroad are young and beautiful, while those who do business in China are older.

In new york, their average monthly income is 6,000 yuan, while the income in Los Angeles is 7,800 yuan higher than that in new york. Chen pointed out that these average incomes did not include tips from guests. Some rich people will give them a lot of tips.

Chen said that China "sex workers" in the United States come to the United States for beautiful purposes, which is different from "sex workers" in other countries. In the United States, the vast majority of "sex workers" did not think that they would engage in the porn industry in the future before coming to the United States. Many young girls who travel from China to Taiwan Province Province and Hongkong have a clear purpose, that is to sell their sex and "seek gold".

He said that Chinese American "sex workers" are older. In new york, their age is generally between 30 and 50, with an average age of 35 to 36. There is also a 55-year-old woman who has become a grandmother. The "sex workers" in Los Angeles are younger, and the youngest is in their twenties.

Come to the United States as an official and leave the team

In the United States, China's "sex workers" basically have identities, such as American citizens, permanent residents, student visas, business visits and tourist visas. He said that someone in China helped them get business visas and so on. Then they came to America to leave the team. Different from other countries, the smuggling groups that help "sex workers" sneak into the United States have nothing to do with pornographic groups. Most of these women came to America with money, not on their own. He said that illegal immigrants to the United States did not borrow money from snakeheads, but borrowed money from relatives and friends and returned the smuggling fees to snakeheads. "stowaways just owe money to relatives and friends."

Chen pointed out that from the women surveyed, these "sex workers" came from many places and "may have a network". He said that "sex workers" in new york and Los Angeles come from Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang, Beijing, Tianjin, Sichuan, Hunan, Chongqing and Guangdong.

He said that half of American "sex workers" are married. About half of these married people have divorced. After marriage, they all went to sea. Their lifestyle is generally to get up at noon 12 and go to work at three or four in the afternoon until the early hours of the morning. He said that many people said they didn't want to do it, hoping to "go ashore" as soon as possible, and planned to save some money to open a shop or restaurant in the future. However, some of them come back after they go back, because they are used to this way of life.

In new york and Los Angeles, the proportion of self-employed China "sex workers" is relatively high, and most of them solicit business by themselves. They rent their own houses to advertise. Many of them can't speak English, but "they should be able to name the nearby streets in English".

Chen Faxian, in the United States, has a high proportion of "sex workers". He said that some undocumented "sex workers" also said that they were going through residence procedures. "Few people don't care about their identity, saying that they want to find someone to get married and get a green card. They think that being a porn industry can improve their chances of getting an identity."

Some "sex workers" revealed that some foreign guests sympathize with them and are willing to fake marriage with them and help them apply for green cards. He said that the fake marriage market in China needs 30,000 to 50,000 yuan for one person. However, some foreign guests are willing to charge only a little money. Someone got a green card by faking a marriage with a guest.

He said that some Americans sympathize with China's "sex workers" and are willing to pay for their redemption. A "sex worker" who specializes in being a guest of foreigners said that a foreigner thought that she was also a trafficked person after seeing many news about Asian women being trafficked, and asked her how much she owed the snakehead. She answered "4,000 yuan". The foreigner promised to help her pay off these debts. So she took the foreigner to Manhattan Chinatown and gave the money to the "snakehead". In fact, this snakehead is her friend, and paying back the money is just a show.

It is often hurt to "go up" when you come.

Chen Faxian, Chinese mainland's "sex workers" have a set of service procedures, but in the United States, everyone is straightforward. When guests come, they "go to bed" without any prelude. And some guests bully "sex workers" at will.

What impressed him most was that the beds, toilets and seats of some "sex workers" were "dirty". This job is not easy to do, it is not done by people. Sex workers who sleep with several men in one day are not only physically hurt, but also psychologically traumatized. Some "sex workers" revealed that some guests would secretly take off condoms in the middle, which would make them very nervous. Some clients are drug addicts or alcoholics. According to the regulations, it takes half an hour to go to work at a time. "This is unbearable for them."

He said that a "sex worker" in new york can receive three or four guests a day on average. However, some beautiful young "sex workers" in Los Angeles have a good business and can receive 20 guests a day. A famous "sex worker" told him, "I have no strength to step on the gas pedal after a day's work."

It is estimated that there are tens of millions of people engaged in the sex industry in the world, and the annual profit is about 30 billion US dollars, which is comparable to the business of smuggling drugs and weapons.

On the contrary, the French have a headache.

In this study on prostitution in China, Chen chose eight Asian cities, namely Shenzhen, Hongkong, Macau, Taipei, Singapore, Bangkok (Thailand), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Jakarta (Indonesia) for comparison. He chose sex workers from 15 to 18 in each city, totaling *** 149. At the same time, we interviewed more than 70 people in the industry, including massage parlor owners, pimps, managers, brokers, grooms and stores. He also interviewed more than 70 judges, police, immigration officials and other law enforcement officials. In addition, he interviewed more than 40 non-profit organizations and other related people. * * * interviewed more than 300 people.

He said that although there are many people interviewed, the focus is still on sex workers and people in the porn industry. He pointed out that in the past, few people knew about these people, but only visited relevant officials and non-profit organizations, not the parties. And he always goes to the workplace for one-on-one face-to-face interviews. "I think the information obtained from this face-to-face interview is highly credible."

When designing the investigation scheme, his initial idea was that he was only responsible for the design of research, statistics and analysis of data, and data collection was carried out by local people. However, the interview survey has been delayed. Finally, he decided to do it himself.

Chen said that he completed the investigation report with the financial support of the Ministry of Justice. After the report is completed, it is natural to submit the report to the Ministry of Justice. However, the results of the report "make the Ministry of Justice feel headache, surprise and anger, because the conclusions of the report are contrary to what they think". He said he was "helpless" about the conflict.

He said that as a scholar, he should seek truth from facts when doing research and cannot cater to the views of the government. He has written the survey results into an English monograph, which has been accepted by new york University Press and is scheduled to be published next year.
