As the first African country established by African Americans, why is Liberia still poor and backward?

Domestic contradictions are sharp. The American free blacks in power thought they were one head taller than the local blacks and always regarded themselves as rulers. In fact, they are a group of colonists who have been oppressing the local indigenous blacks, so the contradiction between the two sides is very sharp and the struggle is constant. Serious internal struggle plunged Liberia into chaos.
