Immigration history of Chongming dialect

Chongming's immigration history began in Yongzheng and Qianlong years of Qing Dynasty. As early as the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, Chen, a Chongming native, took his newlywed wife to Haimen for reclamation, and then a large number of Chongming people went to Haimen for reclamation. In the following decades, a large number of Jiangnan residents moved to settle in Haimen New Sandy Land, which greatly increased the population of Haimen to more than 300,000. At that time, Haimen Group's surname was Zhong Yi, and they all built houses. The smoke in the kitchen was like Haiyun, which was a big party between rivers and seas (Gong Zizhen's words). At the end of the Qing Dynasty, during the reign of Xianfeng and Tongzhi, Chongming often flooded and destroyed the levee, so a large number of Chongming people took refuge in Tongzhou District of Nantong, Chongchuan District, Zhangjiagang City of Suzhou and Jingjiang City of Taizhou to avoid floods. At the end of Qing Dynasty, Guangxu period began. A large number of Chongming landlords sent migrant workers to Qidong for reclamation. In the early years of the Republic of China, Zhang Jian, the champion of Haimen, led Haimen people, Qidong people and Chongming people to reclaim land in Rudong, Hai 'an, Dafeng, Dongtai, Binhai and Sheyang coastal areas, Nanhui District, Fengxian District and Pudong New Area of Shanghai. Therefore, there are many Chongming people or people with Chongming ancestry, which are widely distributed.

Except Chongming Island, the residential characteristics of the other three local dialect users are: large settlements and small mixed settlements. The general distribution of Shadi dialect is: the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the Yellow Sea in northern Jiangsu and the East China Sea in Shanghai.

Chongming dialect is similar to Shanghai dialect, Jiaxing dialect, Suzhou dialect and Taicang dialect. The number of users is huge. Covering a wide area of more than 4,500 square kilometers, it would be enough to build a prefecture-level city if it were not across the river and the sea.
