From March to May this year, the five provinces of Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui and Jiangsu in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River continued to have little rain, and severe drought occurred in some areas. Since the evening of June 3, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River have been flooded with manna. Since then, three rounds of heavy rainfall have followed.
Sun Jun, chief forecaster of the Central Meteorological Observatory, said that from 3 rd to 7 th, the first round of rainfall occurred in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and the drought was obviously alleviated; 9- 1 1, the second round of heavy rainfall caused serious floods in Xianning, Hubei; 12 ~ 13, the rainfall weakened and the distribution of heavy rainfall was scattered. Sun Jun said that many of the three rounds of heavy rainfall in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River were repeated. The first two rounds of rainfall saturated soil moisture, and the water levels of small and medium-sized rivers, reservoirs and lakes were high, and some of them approached or exceeded the warning water level. In the third round of rainfall, some small and medium-sized rivers and reservoirs are in great danger of overflow and dam collapse, which is prone to geological disasters and urban waterlogging.

From June 1 day to June 13, the average precipitation in the Yangtze River basin was slightly higher than that in the same period in history, and the precipitation in the five provinces in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River was 30% to 50% higher than that in the same period in history.
Zhang Peiqun said that according to years of statistics, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River generally enter the rainy season with concentrated precipitation from June 16 to June 19; Since there were meteorological records in 1950s, the earliest time for the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River to enter Mei was June 2nd, which appeared in 199 1 and 1996. Since 2000, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River have entered a period of less precipitation in summer. However, there will also be heavy precipitation in stages. For example, since May last year, there have been 14 rounds of precipitation in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
According to meteorological experts such as Zhang Peiqun, up to now, although the rainfall in some areas of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River has been very strong since June, there is not much abnormality in general; The severe drought in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River before June and the recent sharp turn of drought and flood are really rare.

Sun Jun said that the sudden change of drought and flood since June is mainly due to the change of atmospheric circulation. With the onset of monsoon in June, the southwest warm and humid airflow from the Bay of Bengal strengthened and the water vapor conditions improved. At the same time, there are often weak cold air moving eastward from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Abundant warm and humid air and cold air meet in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, bringing rainfall.
What is the root cause of the recent changes in atmospheric circulation?
Experts from the National Climate Center said that the factors leading to changes in atmospheric circulation and heavy rains in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River are more complicated. Climate experts are making a comprehensive analysis and judgment, and there is no formal conclusion yet.
Meteorologists pointed out that the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, where heavy rainfall occurred, experienced a "sharp turn of drought and flood", but the precipitation in central and northern Anhui, central and northern Jiangsu, northern Hubei and other places was less, and they were still in a meteorological drought state. Therefore, on the whole, drought and flood coexisted.
