Yuanping is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province.

In Yuanding of the Western Han Dynasty for three years, it belonged to Taiyuan County. In 1949, it belonged to Xin county area. In 1958, Luanxian County was abolished and Yuanping County was established, which belongs to the northern Shanxi area. The main tributaries are Yangwu River, Beiyun River, Changle River and Yongxing.
