Why is it so important for human beings to explore Mars?

The earth is slowly dying out, the speed of species extinction is getting faster and faster, the ocean is acidified, and marine life is also seriously threatened. Overfishing makes many species on the verge of extinction. German research also shows that compared with 30 years ago, the number of insects has dropped by as much as 75%. We already know the main problems in the environment, such as global warming, melting glaciers and the gradual loss of control of ecosystems.

However, this is not the first time in history that human beings have destroyed the ecological environment. For a long time, human beings are like a walking plague. Wherever they go, death follows them. The migration route of early humans directly corresponds to the extinction route of large animals, such as mammoths and saber-toothed tigers.

Musk said that he wants to go to Mars because humans are likely to become extinct on the earth. There are many possible reasons, such as global thermonuclear war, global climate change, and even an asteroid hitting the earth. As long as any kind of situation happens, mankind will perish. But going to Mars is equivalent to storing human genes on another "hard disk", which gives our species new opportunities.

This statement sounds quite reliable. But that's not what excites me. If the primary goal of our trip to Mars is to preserve species DNA, then I have to agree with what my friend said before: it is better to spend all our energy on improving the existing environment of the earth so that future generations can continue to survive on the earth. If our problem is the overuse of rockets and fuel, then why spend so much energy to build rockets that consume a lot of fuel? Isn't this putting the cart before the horse?
