Higher education and others

Although many people are dissatisfied with the college entrance examination, it is generally believed that the college entrance examination is the fairest way for children from low-income families to move upward. As long as children are diligent enough, they can be admitted to their favorite schools.

More and more data show that in key universities, the proportion of children from middle-and high-income families is getting higher and higher, and the proportion of children from low-income families is getting lower and lower.

So a few years ago, a university announced that rural candidates who have no college students within three generations of their families can enjoy limited admission concessions. The headmaster's meaning is clear: education changes fate, and we should provide more educational opportunities for students at the bottom. This practice was quickly stopped, because students' family background was difficult to identify, and after qualification examination and approval, they were admitted according to their grades.

So, after entering higher education? A few days ago, China Youth Daily published an article entitled "Parents have nothing to argue about, only graduate school and science and engineering can counterattack ..." The survey data of this article was implemented every two years from October to March, 2007, and each survey involved 28-29 universities with 6400-8400 graduates.

The topic is very straightforward: strive for parents first, then study for graduate students (and major in science and engineering). In order to improve the starting salary of the first job, it is more likely to engage in management and technical work than professional and technical work (the former salary is higher than the latter).

Some ideas in the article are very intriguing.

1. There is an intergenerational effect in higher education, that is, the higher the parents' income, the higher the starting salary of their children's first job, and the higher the probability that their children will engage in this type of occupation when their fathers engage in management and technical occupations.

2. Even if they are engaged in the same occupation, the starting salary of undergraduate and graduate students with low family income is only 70% of the income of graduates with high family income at most, and the lowest can be as low as 50%.

3. Whether undergraduate or graduate, humanities and social sciences majors are more likely to exert the influence of family background when applying for a job. Therefore, children with low family income choose science and engineering majors, which will help them get rid of the shackles of family background in the future.

The survey data cited in this paper is up to 20 13. Class solidification has become one of the social realities in contemporary China. It can be predicted that in the next five or ten years, the phenomenon of social class solidification in China will be more serious than it is now, and it may only be more difficult for young people to achieve upward mobility in the future.

There is no evidence that the economic return of humanities and social sciences majors is higher than that of science and engineering majors. The third point summarized above is personally understood by Tiger Mom as:

(1) Students with diligent and down-to-earth quality of "good students" are easier to find in science and engineering majors;

(2) Students of humanities and social sciences reflect the achievements of family education rather than school education.

So Tiger Mother suddenly realized why primary and secondary school teachers generally like science students. (In the standardized examination, it is also an important reason that science students are easy to get grades. Of course, you can also think of this as a painful realization for a science student who chooses liberal arts after 20 years, hee hee. )

The above conclusions are summarized according to the survey data. Please don't use personal experience to refute group conclusions, such as "I worked hard and chose humanities and social sciences" and "I came from a low-income family, chose humanities and social sciences and found a job with the highest starting salary". Being admitted to a foreign university is an obvious way. Children of alumni are often more likely to be admitted. If several generations in a family go to the same university, their descendants are more likely to be admitted to this university. Rattan school is a private school, and children from rich families can't climb vines at all, so rattan schools are vying for it.

So, what about universities in China? Since the expansion of China University in 1999, the proportion of urban students attending universities has increased faster than that of rural students. For urban students, the expansion of enrollment provides more educational opportunities; For rural students, the educational opportunities provided by enrollment expansion are quite limited.

The gap between urban and rural areas clearly shows the shadow of fighting dad. In the same city?

Xicheng and Haidian always get the best results in the annual senior high school entrance examination and college entrance examination in Beijing. This is interpreted as the best teacher in these two districts when the students' intelligence level is equal. Good teachers attract good students, and good students enhance the reputation of good schools, so the prices in these two districts are the most expensive.

Only high-income families can afford the school district and the high cost of extracurricular education and training. Even if compulsory education advocates a fair starting point, it cannot prevent high-income families from paying high fees to obtain high-quality educational resources. When high-quality education resources are limited, competition is inevitable, and fighting for dad is also an inevitable result.

Some parents hate fighting injustice for their children and insist on "fighting injustice for their children", so many Haidian children take more than three Olympic math classes at the same time and can't grab places.

Do as you would be done by. Everyone knows the truth, and once it is put into practice, it will change its tune.
