Malays in a broad sense refer to ethnic groups distributed in the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean island countries. It belongs to Mongolian Malay type. The commonly used language is the Indonesian family of Austronesian languages. Its ethnic origin is still inconclusive. Most researchers believe that the ancestors of Malays gradually moved southward from the interior of Asia about 5,000 years ago, moved to Indo-China Peninsula, entered Sumatra via the Malay Peninsula (andaman islands), and then spread eastward to Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and the Philippine Islands, and westward to Madagascar. This wave of migration lasted for thousands of years. Generally speaking, according to the migration time, there are two kinds: primitive Malays (including ancient Malays) and new Malays. Primitive Malays migrated from 3000 BC to 1000 BC, with a low level of social development. New Malays migrated from about 2 BC to16th century, and were influenced by Indian, China and Arabic cultures, with a high level of social development. Malays from all over the world left a large number of descendants in their distribution areas, and mixed with local residents and each other to varying degrees, and developed into Javanese, Sunda, Madura, Tagalog, Ifugao, Madagascar and other ethnic groups with different names.
