What is Darfur, Sudan?

Darfur is located in the west of Sudan, bordering Libya, Chad, Central Africa and other countries in the north and south, covering an area of more than 500,000 square kilometers, accounting for about one-fifth of the country's total area. Darfur consists of three states, namely North Darfur, West Darfur and South Darfur, with a population of over 6 million. There are more than 80 tribes living here, including Arabs, Furs and blacks, among which Arabs who believe in Islam live in the north and indigenous blacks who believe in Christianity live in the south.

Darfur is the most backward area in Sudan's economic development, and most local residents are engaged in family animal husbandry.

Darfur used to be rich in rain and fertile land. In 1960s and 1970s, with the expansion of population and overgrazing, the desertification in this area became more and more serious. Arab herders who used to live on water were forced to move south, and they clashed with local black tribes for water grass resources. Due to the long-standing armed conflict between tribes in Darfur, many parts of the region have been in anarchy and chaos.
