The United States has occupied Puerto Rico for more than one hundred years. Why hasn't it been swallowed up so far?

The United States has never annexed Puerto Rico, mainly because the unemployment rate in Puerto Rico is too high and Puerto Rico has a lot of foreign debts. Therefore, if the United States annex it, it will bring great economic pressure to the United States, so the United States has always occupied but not annexed it.

Puerto Rico is a state in the eastern Caribbean. The aborigines of Puerto Rico were Indians, and later they were occupied by Spain and became Spanish colonies. Later, with the outbreak of some wars, Spain lost to the United States, so Puerto Rico was ceded to the United States. Thus, the United States has been occupying Puerto Rico, but one hundred years later, the United States has never annexed Puerto Rico. The main reason for this phenomenon is that the unemployment rate in Puerto Rico is too high and the economy of the United States itself is very unstable. Therefore, if Puerto Rico with high unemployment rate is annexed, the American economy will be threatened to some extent.

On the other hand, Puerto Rico has a lot of foreign debts, so once the United States annex Puerto Rico, it means that these foreign debts need to be borne by the United States, and for the United States, which has always taken interests as its main survival goal, it will not take such a big risk to annex Puerto Rico. Maintaining the current state, that is, just occupying Puerto Rico, is a favorable thing for the United States, because it is the best choice for the United States to simply grasp some important information of them and make use of it without taking great risks and economy.

The reason why the United States has not annexed Puerto Rico for a hundred years is that most people living in Puerto Rico in the past are immigrants, and the United States hates and despises immigrants, so this is one of the reasons why they have not annexed Puerto Rico.
