A must-see on Thanksgiving Day | Why are you grateful? Who are you grateful to?
1. The origin of Thanksgiving?
The origin of Thanksgiving must always be Go back to the beginning of American history. In 1620, the famous Mayflower ship arrived in America, carrying 102 Puritans who could not endure the religious persecution in England. In the winter between 1620 and 1621, they encountered unimaginable difficulties and suffered from hunger and cold. In the end, only about 50 immigrants survived.
The kind-hearted Indians brought daily necessities to the immigrants, and specially sent people to teach them how to hunt, fish, and grow corn and pumpkins. With the help of the Indians, the immigrants finally got a good harvest. On the day of celebrating the harvest, the immigrants set a day to thank God, and to thank the Indians, they invited them to celebrate the festival together. Thanksgiving has been spread for more than 300 years and has been preserved to this day.
Thanksgiving is mainly to express gratitude to God. When the Puritans were blessed in difficult circumstances, they did not forget that this was God’s grace and God’s favor, so it is special for Thanksgiving comes from giving thanks.
Thanksgiving, as an annual national holiday, began on October 3, 1863, after President Abraham Lincoln made the "Thanksgiving Declaration". In 1941, Congress moved to change the date of Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday in November.
During Thanksgiving, churches often hold thanksgiving dinners and evangelistic meetings. Brothers and sisters will seize this opportunity to invite seekers to the church. This is a festival to thank God and preach the gospel to people.
Why celebrate Thanksgiving? Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in everything, because this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. ?(1 Thessalonians 5:16)
Christians should live a life of giving thanks in everything. So, is it necessary for Christians to celebrate Thanksgiving?
The important thing is not one Day, the important thing is that we can have a special day to count the many graces that we usually ignore, to express gratitude to God, to express gratitude to those who have helped us, and to show love to those in need. In this sense, it is necessary to use the form of Thanksgiving to recognize the inherent Christian spirit of giving thanks in everything.
2. Why do we need Thanksgiving?
Three responses are proposed based on the teachings of the Bible:
1. Give thanks in all circumstances to God’s will. For this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. ?(1 Thessalonians 5:18)
Expressing gratitude to God in a special form is a responsibility that humans with fallen tendencies need to fulfill. In the Old Testament, God himself taught the Israelites in the form of laws to observe Thanksgiving. The first fruits of the crops arriving in the land of Canaan should be presented to the Lord, a thanksgiving offering should be offered, and Pentecost should be observed as an eternal statute from generation to generation. The church holds Thanksgiving Day to remind us to remember God’s teachings and that it is necessary to always be grateful and reverent. Acts of gratitude are expressions of submission to God’s authority.
2. Gratitude is the virtue of repaying kindness
Thanksgiving is a special holiday that reminds a society and individuals that everything I have is given by God. We must know how to repay kindness and how to count the grace in our lives. The German classical philosopher Feuerbach said: Sympathy, gratitude, and love make you a human being. ?This virtue of counting grace is exactly what our society needs.
3. Being grateful will bring you more grace
Jesus said: Aren’t there ten people who were cleansed? Where are the nine? Except for this foreigner, no one else will return. To the glory of God? Then he said to the man, "Get up and go! Your faith has saved you." ?(Luke 17:17-19). In the incident when Jesus healed ten lepers, we see that only one Samaritan knew how to return and express thanksgiving to God after being healed. We also saw that the other nine people were merely healed, but this grateful man was not only healed, but also saved.
Being grateful is not a condition for receiving grace. If so, being grateful is no longer grateful, but a grateful person must be a more favored person.
How should we be grateful
True gratitude should transcend time
We can be grateful anytime, anywhere. It’s not just Thanksgiving that we should be thankful for, we should be thankful anytime and anywhere. True gratitude should transcend the self.
This kind of gratitude is not based on personal gains and losses, nor is it based on one's own experience, but on God's will for us in Christ Jesus. True gratitude is a natural outflow of the Christian life.
We live in grace but are unaware of it. Instead, we take everything for granted. The fact is, is there any day in our lives when we do not live by the grace of God? Not to mention the length, breadth, height, and depth of the salvation of Christ’s cross, are we grateful for the sunshine, water, and air we need for our daily survival? ?
True gratitude transcends reality.
We often look at the environment and reality from a human perspective, but we cannot see the master who controls reality. We thank God because His sovereignty and His wonderful attributes deserve our thanksgiving and worship. ?The Lord sat as King in the time of the flood. The Lord sits as King forever and ever. ? (Psalm 29:10)
Become a grateful person
1. Believe in God’s good will. In the past, you meant to harm me, but God’s intention was good. He saved the lives of many people and achieved today’s situation. ?(Genesis 50:20) We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. ?(Romans 8:28)
In real life we ??often encounter difficulties and hardships. We cannot fully know God’s will, but we can be sure that God’s will is good. There are hundreds of verses in the Bible that tell us that God’s will for us is to bless and bring peace, but not one of them tells us that God will harm us. Even temptations permitted by God are ultimately for our benefit. Therefore, we can firmly believe that God is always right and God is good to me. Then we can give thanks in everything.
2. Be grateful and count the Lord’s grace. From His abundant grace, we have all received it, and grace upon grace. ?(John 1:16)
We often learn to cherish something after we lose it. We also often regret the past, ignore the present, and fantasize about the future.
Those great spiritual men in history all knew how to record the Lord’s actions in their lives. They wrote diaries every day to record God’s grace, and they often read through them to count the Lord’s grace. When trouble comes, those past graces will strengthen their faith in times of temptation. If we know how to count God’s grace in our lives, we will be more grateful and confident about the future.
3. Always be kind and express gratitude
When God taught the Israelites how to celebrate Thanksgiving, he wanted them to learn to count the Lord’s grace and express gratitude. Express gratitude with gifts to God and favors to people.
First of all, we must offer gifts to God. That is to offer a thank-offering, to offer something.
Secondly, give benefits to others. In every Sabbath year and Jubilee year, brothers who are in debt and distress are exempted, orphans, widows and the poor and vulnerable groups in society are given, and crops on the edges of the fields are left behind so that the poor can pick up the lost crops with dignity.
Today, we no longer need to go to the temple to offer various sacrifices, but we can support gospel ministries through donations; witness the great love of Christ through social services, care for those around us, and express gratitude.
