President Coolidge's Family Introduction

John Calvin Coolidge was born in Plymouth, Windsor County, Vermont on July 4th, 872. He is the only president who was born on American Independence Day. Father John Calvin Coolidge (1845–1926) and mother Victoria Josephine Moore (1875–1890). He has a sister, Abigail Grace Coolidge (1875–1890). The Coolidge family has deep roots in New England. Ancestor John Coolidge immigrated from Cambridge, England to Watertown, Massachusetts as early as 1630. Coolidge's grandmother, Sarah Almeda Brewer, has two famous cousins: Senator Arthur Brown and feminist activist Olympia Brown. Coolidge studied at Syracuse University, where he joined the Phi Gamma Delta Brotherhood. At the urging of his father, Coolidge went to Northampton, the county seat of Hampshire, after graduation, where he worked as a lawyer.

Coolidge's grandfather John Calvin Coolidge worked in various local departments in Plymouth. Sarah bruch is also from New England. Coolidge claimed that he inherited the descent of North American Indians from Sarah, but there was no evidence to confirm this claim.

Coolidge's father is a farmer, but he is also a local school teacher and sheriff. His mother Victoria is also the daughter of a farmer who lives in Plymouth notch in the same town. Victoria suffered from a chronic disease (possibly tuberculosis) and died early in 1885. However, his father lived until after he entered the White House, and presided over the swearing-in ceremony of his successor Harding at 1923.
