On the 23rd, the Macao Executive Council discussed and approved the revision of relevant administrative regulations, and decided to take measures such as substantially increasing the amount of fines and strict management to curb overstayers. According to the current system, foreigners can't overstay in Macao for more than 30 days, and they will be fined 20 patacas per day for overstaying, which will not play a deterrent role. The amended legislation stipulates that the fine for overstaying will be increased from MOP 20 yuan to MOP 200 yuan every day. Those who repeat the offence within 180 days will not be able to stay after paying the fine. Overstayers must pay a fine immediately when they are detained or surrender, otherwise they will be regarded as illegal immigrants and may not apply for going to Australia within two years. The problem of overstaying foreigners has always existed in Macao, but it is worth noting that the number of overstayers increased by nearly 120% in the first quarter of this year.
