The origin of the word Jiangxi laobiao?

To understand the origin of the term "Jiangxi Cousins", we must know the two great population migrations in China in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties. Historically, these two migrations were called "Jiangxi fills Huguang and Huguang fills Sichuan". The great migration of Jiangxi ancestors opened up a new world in the history of China.

1364 (from yuan dynasty to twenty-four years), Zhu Yuanzhang, the Ming emperor, sent general Xu Da to attack Changsha, and fought a bloody battle with the old army of Chen Youliang and the remnants of the yuan dynasty for four years, with a crushing defeat. Finally, it won in 1368 (the first year of Hongwu) and established the rule of the Ming Dynasty in Changsha. At the end of Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of Ming Dynasty, this kind of successive war disasters made the rural areas of Changsha barren, the people scattered, Lusheng was the city, and many places were barren. As a result, the Ming Dynasty moved a large number of Jiangxi immigrants to Changsha (Hubei and Hunan, when the two provinces were one province, called Huguang Province), which made "farming" play a grand epic of "Jiangxi filling Huguang" in history. During the Chongzhen period of Ming Dynasty, due to the peasant uprising of Zhang, there were frequent wars in Deyang area. In the sixteenth year of Kangxi, the Qing army killed innocent people in order to destroy the rebels, and the population was exhausted and deserted. According to the decree of the Qing court, many residents in Jiangxi, Hunan and Hubei were forced to move. People call this great migration "Jiangxi fills Huguang and Huguang fills Sichuan". Centuries have passed, and in the long history of China, Jiangxi people have played an important role in the five major migrations. In the grand symphony played in time and space, the ancestors of Jiangxi, like tenacious seeds, fell on the avenue of Dayi and scattered in the hinterland until they took root and sprouted. The origin of the word "Jiangxi laobiao" is related to these two great population migrations. But the specific situation is different. There are two theories about the origin of "Jiangxi Old Table" in academic circles:

One theory is that wars originated in ancient times. Many Jiangxi people immigrated to Hunan. Hunan people are descendants of Jiangxi people, and they think that they are cousins with Jiangxi ancestors, so they call Jiangxi people "Jiangxi cousins". Jiangxi is their parents' land and Jiangxi people are their relatives. So Jiangxi people are called cousins.

The second argument is that the ancestors of Jiangxi believed in geomantic omen, and it was easy to master the direction during the migration. They always love to carry a watch (an ancient compass), so mainlanders call Jiangxi people "old watches". It is said that most academic circles agree with the latter statement.

There is also a saying outside the academic circle: the title of "Jiangxi Laobiao" originated from Zhu Yuanzhang's theory of being saved in Jiangxi and repaying his debt. That is, Zhu Yuanzhang, the leader of the peasant uprising at the end of Yuan Dynasty, was rescued by the people after being injured in Kangshan. In order to thank the people of Jiangxi for their help, Zhu Yuanzhang promised that if he won the world, the people of Jiangxi could directly look for him in the name of "old cousin" when they were in trouble. 1368, Zhu Yuanzhang proclaimed himself emperor in Nanjing. One year, when there was a drought in Jiangxi, he recommended a representative to visit the emperor in Nanjing in the name of "cousin" and asked for tax relief. In order to win over the world, Zhu Yuanzhang ordered tax relief. Since then, Jiangxi people are happy to call themselves, and are also called "Jiangxi cousins" by others.
