Brief introduction of three funerals in Escada

In a border town bordering Mexico in western Texas, the patrolmen here always pay attention to the border every day, because illegal immigrants from Mexico are always in an endless stream. Escada (Julio Cedillo), an honest and kind Mexican immigrant, is a cowboy. He found a job on a farm in a small town, and together with the farm housekeeper Pete (tommy lee jones), he entrusted Pete with something. If he dies in this place, he must ask Pete to send his body back to his hometown. Mike (barry pepper) is a newly transferred policeman. He and his wife live in a simple room by the railway. Although the couple are young, their appearance is quite different, and their expressions are always numb because of the dull life every day. Whenever Mike goes to work, his boring wife will sit in the cafe and look out the window to kill time. Rachel (Melissa Leo), the owner of the coffee shop, is a woman who is unwilling to be lonely, juggling between her husband, the sheriff and Pete.

One day, Escada was accidentally shot and killed by Mike while herding sheep. Mike, who was in great trouble, buried Escada in a hurry, hoping to hide it. Soon, the police received a report that the body was found. The sheriff who learned the truth neglected his duty and tried to protect Mike. At his instigation, Escada, who had no friends, was once again buried in the graveyard of homeless people. Pete found out that the police refused to file a case. Rachel, who learned the truth from the sheriff, told Pete that Mike killed him. To avenge his best friend, Peter beat and kidnapped Mike. Later, Peter took Mike to the cemetery, asked him to dig up Escada's body, and coerced Mike to embark on a journey to Mexico together.
