Why did a large number of immigrants appear in the Western Jin Dynasty?
The north has always been the political and economic center of China, but at the end of the Western Jin Dynasty, the north suffered from civil strife and the invasion of ethnic minorities. From 29 1-306 AD, the Western Jin Dynasty experienced the famous Eight Kings Rebellion. The Eight Kings Rebellion was a struggle for power and interests within Sima's family, but this civil strife led to the subjugation of the Western Jin Dynasty and the turmoil in the north for more than 300 years. After the demise of the Western Jin Dynasty, Si Marui, the son of the imperial clan, moved south to establish the Eastern Jin Dynasty in the south, and the capital moved from Luoyang to Jiankang.
However, after the "Five Chaos" in the north, various ethnic minorities in the north (Xiongnu, Xianbei, Anta, Qiang and Di) successively established political power. In the past 100 years, there have been 16 countries of different sizes in the north. These countries are at war with each other, one after another, and the whole north is in turmoil. Comparatively speaking, the Eastern Jin Dynasty in the south was relatively peaceful and was also the Han regime. Therefore, the northern families, literati, intellectuals and civilians have been moving south and taking root in the south. Northerners migrated in Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Fujian provinces, which formed the climax of China people's first southward migration.
Moving northward has brought advanced technology and culture to the south, promoted the economic development of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and promoted the development of the whole south. In order to manage immigrants from the north, the Southern Dynasties successively set up overseas Chinese states, counties and counties in the south to receive immigrants reasonably. According to statistics, by the time of Emperor Xiaowu of Song Dynasty, the general manager had received more than 2 million immigrants from the north. The migration of these northerners to the south also played a certain role in the preservation of Central Plains culture.
