Beitan Village, the largest Hakka paddock in Leizhou Peninsula, Tanbian Village, Leizhou City
The largest Hakka paddock on the peninsula was built after the ancestral home was recognized.
It takes about 2 hours to drive from Zhanjiang City to Beitan Village. Soon after entering the village, you can see a square Hakka paddock. The entire Hakka paddock in Beitan Village is rectangular, with a width of 18m and a depth of 25m. It is two stories high, with a south gate and a north gate for access. There is a courtyard with a patio door, and the upstairs and downstairs are connected by cloisters. All beams are made of solid materials, with strict workmanship, and the upper and lower floors are made of bricks and tiles, which is known as the "sky building". But around the whole Hakka paddock, the wall is very high and there is no gap in the wall. This is a building with Hakka enclosure style. In the early years of the Republic of China, in order to avoid thieves, the descendants of Deng built enemy towers at the four corners of the roof to watch the defense. According to textual research, the Hakka enclosure in this village is the most complete and largest enclosure in Leizhou Peninsula so far.
For a long time, there is no Hakka settlement in Leizhou Peninsula. Why is there such a big Hakka paddock in Beitan? According to the in-depth textual research and consulting of Deng's genealogy by the local literature and history department, it is known that the descendants of Deng's in north beach village have become very famous. During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, after checking the genealogy, the Deng family went to Meizhou in eastern Guangdong to recognize the clan. After coming back, they built a large Hakka house in the village, imitating their ancestral home and living together.
According to Beitan people, in addition to the largest Hakka paddock on the peninsula, Beitan Village has many amazing relics and antiquities. Among them, three connected ponds have clear water quality, just like a jade chain; Around the pond are ancient stone roads, arch bridges, ancient trees, the former residence of Deng, a magistrate of a county in the Qing Dynasty, and antique ancestral temples such as Wenhe Gongci and Gongci. There used to be four turrets and a stone fortress in the village. At present, there is only one turret with a base of 4×6 meters and a height of about 10 meters on three floors in the primary and secondary schools in the village. The whole turret is also very Hakka style, with brick and wood structure and lime-sand structure, which is firm and distinctive.
