Album introduction:
1977, when george lucas's Star Wars was born, no one expected that it would have such a profound impact on Hollywood and even the world's film production technology and concept. Not only is the film itself recognized as a landmark work in the film history, but even its original music has surpassed the status of mere accessories and become one of the most classic orchestral masterpieces in contemporary music. From the splendor of Star Wars, the gloom of The Empire Strikes Back, and the perceptual aestheticism of The Return of the Warriors, we can trace back to the tension of contradiction in The Phantom Threat, the thrilling attack of the clones, and the tragic revenge of the Sith. John williams, a film music master who is good at creating theme melody, wrote the longest and most beautiful stroke in his creative career. ...
I. Star Wars: A New Hope
Just like the full name of the first Star Wars movie, john williams painted an epic picture full of hope and grandeur with impassioned orchestral brushwork.
Since the appearance of talking movies, movie music has been in an embellishment position for a long time. Even in the fifty or sixty years known as the golden age, few works can exist independently of movies. Coupled with the impact of popular culture such as TV, in order to reduce the production cost and cater to the appreciation taste of ordinary audiences, a large number of small orchestral music elements have gradually occupied the mainstream of original sound creation. John williams, who was engaged in jazz and music creation in his early years, happened to be one of the main promoters of this trend. Dramatically, when this modernization trend reached its climax in the 1970s, john williams created Star Wars with an unprecedented return attitude, which revived the tradition of classical orchestral arrangement in the field of film soundtrack creation.
When the movie "Star Wars 1977" was released, the optical disc technology had not yet come out. That year, its soundtrack only released vinyl records and tapes. It was not until 1986 that Polydor Records was first released on CD. John williams composed and directed 16 pieces of music performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, which were divided into two parts in several versions, with a total length of nearly 74 minutes. Although this soundtrack has been complained by many movie music fans from song selection to production, it does not affect the popularity of the work itself.
As a work that won Golden Globe Award, Oscar Award and Grammy for Best Film Score, the charm of Star Wars even conquered many large orchestras specializing in classical music, among which Philharmonia Orchestra was one. The film was released in the same year (65438+February). Under the direction of conductor Charles gerhardt, they re-played six pieces of music composed by john williams, and released vinyl records together with another work by John, The Third Intimate Contact. Compared with the rough production of the first edition, this 33-minute condensed version of Star Wars is more worthy of the classic status of the work itself. 1989, RCA record company produced its CD version with digital technology, which further improved the sound quality. So far, this Dolby surround mix CD is still the best of all Star Wars records.
1993, the Star Wars trilogy was first introduced in the form of a suit. Among the four CDs, besides the soundtracks of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the samurai, there is also a collection of the soundtracks of these three films. Although some previously unreleased tracks were added to each record, they did not attract applause as expected because of the heavy traces of the rhythm of the picture and the mistakes in arrangement.
1997, on the 20th anniversary of the release of Star Wars, in order to warm up the upcoming prequel of Star Wars, director george lucas restored and edited the original. In the same year, in order to cooperate with the release of this special edition of Star Wars, RCA Records took the opportunity to launch a special edition of the original sound. Although there are still two CDs, it is nearly half an hour more than the first edition 1977. Some of them have never been released, and there are some different replacement tracks, which set a record for the most complete track of all the original tracks of Star Wars. After 20 years of waiting, fans finally have a chance to fully enjoy the wonderful music of Star Wars.
At the end of last year, in order to cooperate with the release of Star Wars trilogy DVD, Sony Classical Records Company once again put the original soundtrack of Star Wars on the market as a collector's edition. Although the cover and package have changed, and the disc format has added gimmicks such as screensavers, the tracks included are exactly the same as the special edition released by RCA Records Company 1997, so it has not caused great repercussions.
Ⅱ. The Empire Strikes Back
The high-spirited and gorgeous brass music has undergone a 180 degree reversal in the hands of john williams, and darth vader's tyrannical theme has become the soul voice of the "Star Wars" series.
With the success of a series of music works with strong personal style, john williams firmly ranked among the "masters of music" in the late 1970s and made a magnificent music style, which runs through all his works. In particular, the theme song he created, even if it is enjoyed separately from the film, will not damage its artistic value at all. Therefore, when 1980 Lucas continued to set off his "Star Wars" storm on the screen, john williams naturally became the only one who composed music. The theme melody of the sequel usually inherits many melody genes from the previous one, so it is unlikely to surpass it. This law was broken by john williams in The Empire Strikes Back, and the majestic voice was mixed with contradictory horns to dig deeper spiritual connotation.
1980, the soundtrack of The Empire Strikes Back, which was first released with the release of the film, has many similarities with Star Wars. It was also composed by john williams and played by the London Symphony Orchestra. It also only releases vinyl records and tapes, including about 74 minutes of music, but the total number of tracks has changed slightly, from 16 to 16. 1986, Polydor Records released the CD version for the first time, but it was seriously shrunk. Of the original 65,438+07 pieces of music in vinyl records and tape versions, only 65,438+00 pieces have been preserved, and the total time of tracks has been drastically reduced to 465,438+0 minutes. Not to mention, even the beautifully made brochures on vinyl records are gone. Therefore, the CD version of original music is not as popular as vinyl records and tape versions.
The Empire Strikes Back once again won the Golden Globe Award and the Oscar for Best Film Score for john williams. Although it failed in the end, it won the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Works and the Award for Best Film Album. Nowadays, more and more people re-examine and find that john williams's "Imperial March" (Darth Vader theme) is the core movement to master the whole Star Wars story, and it is also the most thought-provoking work in all Star Wars theme music. 1980, shortly after the release of the original music of The Empire Strikes Back, conductor Charles gerhardt led American national Philharmonia Orchestra to score twice, reinterpreted 12 pieces of music specially created by john williams for this film, and put it on the market in the form of vinyl records. 1989, RCA Records released the re-recorded Star Wars and The Return of the Warrior on CD at the same time, but did not make this 45-minute recording public. It was not until 1992 that the rising record company Varese Salaband in the field of film soundtrack production and distribution did not become the heritage of the sea. Compared with Star Wars, the re-recorded Empire Strikes Back has many defects in recording quality and performance level, especially the original brilliant brass music in Empire March is exhausted due to lack of sufficient momentum.
1993, RCA Records made a set of original recordings of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Warriors for the first time. In addition to three independent soundtrack CDs, there is also a collection of trilogy music works. Although some previously unreleased tracks have been added to each record, only the part of The Empire Strikes Back is satisfactory. The music lasting for 108 minutes almost added all the neglected main themes, instead of trivial little moves, which fully made up for many regrets caused by the soundtrack of the first CD version of the movie at 1986.
1997 When Star Wars celebrated its 20th anniversary, after Star Wars, director george lucas also restored and edited The Empire Strikes Back, making it reappear on the screen in the form of a special edition. RCA Records took this opportunity to release a special edition of the original sound for the first time. Although the previously released Star Wars trilogy soundtrack "The Empire Strikes Back" has relatively complete tracks and perfect standards, the special edition of "The Empire Strikes Back" has added 16 minutes of new tracks and some different alternative soundtracks. In addition to making Star Wars fans feel that comparing the nuances of music is a bit interesting, the effect is not quite the same as that of Star Wars Special Edition.
After a lapse of seven years, Sony Classical Records released the special edition soundtrack of The Empire Strikes Back into a collection soundtrack by using the DVD of the Star Wars trilogy. Without adding any new music paragraphs, the record company focused on making some small gimmicks, not only replacing the new cover and packaging, but also adding some content other than music in CD format, which is quite suspected of changing the soup without changing the medicine.
Ⅲ. The return of the samurai
John williams's colorful brass music was finally replaced by low-key strings, and the first round of Star Wars story ended peacefully in the delicate and peaceful new century movement.
After time's tempering, john williams's attainments in film music creation, especially in the theme melody creation, have gradually reached the level of perfection. 1983, when george lucas invited again, john williams's March complex had become a household name. Both the Star Wars series itself and john williams are under great pressure to become famous. After experiencing two classic themes, one bright and one dark, john williams, who abandoned modern music elements for many years and praised classical orchestral writing techniques, made a bold attempt for the first time in his most striking masterpiece. The new century style combines tradition and modernity, and roots the joy and tranquility of the past in the theme melody of Princess Liya. Although it failed to take the lead, it made the most unique human poem in Star Wars.
When 1983 The Return of the Warriors was released, the future of traditional vinyl records began to be questioned. The newly released CD (that is, CD) directly threatens the leading position of vinyl records in the commercial market with its advantages of easy preservation. Therefore, although the vinyl and tape soundtrack of Return of the Warrior was published for the first time, the music produced by john williams and London Symphony Orchestra three times was taken out of context more seriously, and only 1 1 was included, with a total time of less than 45 minutes. From this soundtrack, people found that every once in a while, there must be an updated and better version of the soundtrack of the Star Wars series, which made up for some defects in the previous version from the content of the tracks.
From the magnificent epic chapter to the beautiful nature of the small jasper, the biggest controversy caused by The Return of the Warrior is that it doesn't seem to have a particularly weighty theme melody like the first two. Although he also won the Golden Globe Award, Oscar Award and Grammy nomination for best film score, he got nothing. This is also the first time that john williams has composed music for the Star Wars series. Objectively speaking, the theme of Princess Leia, the core movement written by john williams for The Return of the Warriors, has no charm like other themes, but its delicate and graceful style is like a little red among evergreen trees, emitting a unique style. Conductor Charles Gerhardt realized this at that time, and he led the American national Philharmonia Orchestra to re-record the score composed by john williams for the third time. Compared with the original version, the new version of this vinyl record has greatly improved in track arrangement and audibility. 1989, RCA record company produced its CD version with digital technology. After Dolby surround mixing, the melody charm of the work itself has been fully exerted and has been widely praised by fans.
1993 is an important moment for Star Wars fans. The original music of the Star Wars trilogy released in the form of a suit for the first time satisfies people's desire to hear more tracks in the movie. Among them, 53 minutes of music was added to the soundtrack of "The Return of the Warriors" and the related tracks included in the three film soundtracks. The only regret is that the limited music that can really be enjoyed independently, most of which need to cooperate with the detailed paragraphs of the picture, has not achieved the expected sensational effect.
Twenty years after the release of Star Wars, george lucas also began to prepare for the completion of his Star Wars myth. He completely restored and edited the Star Wars trilogy and made it into a special edition for global distribution. During this period, RCA Records also reissued john williams's original songs for three Star Wars movies in the name of a special edition. In this version, Return of the Samurai, like the other two films, contains the most comprehensive repertoire ever. The contents of the two CDs reached 148 minutes, setting a record for the original soundtrack of Star Wars movies. These tracks not only have wonderful movements that have not been released before, but also contain some new songs created by john williams for the added plot, which are of great collection value.
Last year, the old Star Wars trilogy released a DVD to promote Revenge of the Sith, the last episode of the Star Wars trilogy. Sony Classical Records, which got the original music copyright, released the original music of three Star Wars movies, such as Return of the Warriors. This version only changed the cover and packaging, added some behind-the-scenes materials in CD format, and the tracks were completely copied from the previous special edition, so its appeal was limited. In order to facilitate the preservation, Sony Classical Records not only released the original music of three Star Wars movies separately, but also combined the original music of three Star Wars movies to launch a collection set.
This music album is the soundtrack of "Star Wars Trilogy" movie, 128kbps, 4CD, set collection edition, composed by john williams.
