Putian dialect originated from Chaoshan Putian.

Putian dialect is a Minnan dialect which has long been influenced by Mindong dialect (Fuzhou dialect), and it is the Putian dialect area of Minnan dialect, which occupies an important position in the whole language system. It first appeared in the Western Han Dynasty, the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and was formed in the Sui and Tang Dynasties, with the orthodox language of the Central Plains as the main source. Xinghua dialect, commonly known as Puxian dialect, is a living fossil of ancient Chinese in the Central Plains. Xinghua dialect is characterized by its distinctive eight tones (including Baiyang dialect) and retains many ancient Chinese words in the Central Plains before the Tang Dynasty. Although influenced by Fuzhou dialect, Putian dialect is basically the same as Quanzhou dialect in terms of literary and colloquial correspondence, phonetic structure, basic vocabulary and grammar. Therefore, if a Putian person lives in Zhangzhou, Quanzhou for a long time, it is easy to learn Quanzhou dialect. Therefore, the Putian dialect of Putian people who immigrated to Zhangzhou, Quanzhou was quickly assimilated by the local dialect, and the Putian dialect in Zhangzhou, Quanzhou was easily transformed into Quanzhou dialect or Zhangzhou dialect, so it was not easy to form Xinghua dialect island in Zhangzhou, Quanzhou. Some Putian people immigrated to Chaoshan and Hainan again after hundreds of years in Quanzhou and Zhangzhou. Putian dialect of Putian people who immigrated to Zhangzhou, Quanzhou was quickly assimilated by the local dialect. Moreover, a large number of Putian people have immigrated to Zhangzhou, Quanzhou for hundreds to thousands of years. The Putian dialect of these Putian people has been completely assimilated into Quanzhou dialect or Zhangzhou dialect, which can be easily converted into Quanzhou dialect or Zhangzhou dialect in Quanzhou and Zhangzhou, so it is not easy to form Xinghua dialect island in Quanzhou and Zhangzhou.
