With the continuous growth of mothers born in 1970s and 1980s, China's concept of family education has changed greatly. More and more Chinese mothers and their children are starting to enter world-class international schools through autonomous learning. These families take the lead in cultivating children's interests, improving their quality and participating in public welfare activities.

They take the family as a unit, polish a set of complete learning mechanisms and methods through good educational planning, strict screening and inspection, and take their children to realize their ideals step by step.

Chun Teng said that mothers who are representative of such families and are practicing their learning dreams are invited to share their educational planning experience, practical observation and learning ideas, so that their learning methods can be shared and used for reference by more people.

Comparison of Chinese and foreign education

Mary, it's almost three years since your family immigrated to Canada. I want to know, in your initial immigration consideration, what percentage is your child's education?

Children's education accounts for half of my family's immigration.

Is the reason why you chose to give up your domestic education still valid? Do you think the advantages and disadvantages of education at home and abroad are obvious compared with those received abroad?

It is still valid. We went to an international school when we were in China, so we were very satisfied with the school before we left China. If we compare the differences in education at home and abroad, I can only say that the exam-oriented education I have been exposed to in China is indeed different.

First of all, there are obvious differences between learning methods and emphasis.

For example, domestic schools have high requirements for students' grades, and students are under great homework pressure. The competition for children to enter primary school is fierce. Many children wore glasses a long time ago, and I don't like it.

Why? Because in my child's primary school, what I am most worried about is not the pressure of study and the future career choice. I don't want my children to learn by rote in primary school. The most important thing is to make him interested in learning and keep it. "Learning interest and autonomous learning ability are very important abilities for a person. I don't want heavy homework to ruin this ability of children. 」

In addition, "there should be enough freedom and time for self-study in primary school." After arriving abroad, I feel that the environment and atmosphere for studying abroad by self-study examination are better.

Can you give me an example to illustrate that the environment and atmosphere of self-taught exams abroad are better?

For example, the attitude of foreign public schools towards students is objective and fair, which is quite good. "In primary schools abroad, management focuses on students' awareness of rules, which cultivates the rules and attitudes of this person in society. This is also in line with the child's growth law. It is very important to cultivate children's discipline from an early age.

Schools here also produce report cards, but the grading methods are different. Generally, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 are used to divide different grades. Whether the grade is good or not depends mainly on the children's own learning acceptance ability, and it will not be particularly forced to reach which score segment. Parents don't have to worry too much about their children's behavior management in public, because schools and teachers attach great importance to these. Once, my son said "shut up" to other children at school, and the teacher called me and talked to me seriously. The school thinks it's serious.

Yes, if it is in China, the teacher will remind you but will not care too much about such problems as swearing, at least he will not call his parents. However, if children get low test scores, they will be called parents, which is also an education-oriented problem.

Do you think domestic education has advantages over foreign education?

The advantage of domestic education lies in mathematics. My son said that at school, mathematics is still based on the first and second grades in China.

What I have learned is that the knowledge of mathematics teaching in primary schools abroad is relatively shallow. I didn't learn to multiply one digit by two digits until the fourth grade, but I learned double digits, area and circumference in the third grade in China.

That's right. Different countries have different ideas in mathematics learning. But abroad, mathematics is a course that can be started. This can be seen in the SAT. Foreign schools don't teach multiplication formulas. But I let my children learn multiplication formula, which will be faster and save time.

It is said that India's multiplication formula is more powerful, and the multiplication of two digits can be calculated quickly.

02

The focus of basic education at home and abroad

Compared with the education mode in China, what is the emphasis in other aspects of learning?

Another focus is language learning. "China pays special attention to reading and writing in language learning", and all reading studies point to writing. All children should write out what they learned that day according to the requirements of the school. For example, in a new country and city, there is an interesting book, and you get some new inspiration. The teacher asked you to write it, which is quite gratifying.

So in North America, although children's top math students are very popular, I didn't make up math for them. Because under this educational mechanism, as long as children have enough reading and writing skills, it is no problem to learn mathematics well in school. But in order to train the ability of mathematical logic thinking, I asked Ari to study chess all the time, which is also his favorite project.

The primary school students in China now have heavy schoolwork, and the biggest impact is that their reading time is squeezed out, because homework is always the first thing, and reading is something they have time to do. Playing time has also been squeezed out a lot, and extracurricular classes can't be arranged. There is a saying in China about studying in foreign schools that overseas students study a lot, which gives great anxiety to many parents in China who don't have time to let their children study. Is that so?

Foreign schools do give children enough reading time. I think there may be two reasons, one is the educational concept, and the other is the public reading environment.

First of all, public schools in Canada pay more attention to language learning and expose children to drama, reading and writing in their daily study. "The school's reading requirements for students emphasize writing and expression, and the specific requirements are much more than those in China", such as reading a book, what the book tells me, and what I think of the book. This habit gives children a lot of time to think and summarize, and training and guidance are very important.

Secondly, the teacher requires a child to read for at least 30 minutes every day, and the child's writing ability comes from these accumulations.

Third, "schools are unlikely to stipulate what books children should read." In Canada, the teacher's desk is in the classroom. The teacher will bring many books to the classroom, and students can read the books brought by the teacher. According to these books, children will develop their favorite books.

Fourth, "There are many libraries in Canada, which are also very good. You can borrow as many books as you want, as long as you can read them all. This is very important for children's reading. Because books here are expensive, parents don't have to buy them themselves, saving time and effort.

In other words, foreign schools regard reading and writing as basic learning abilities, and pay more attention to children's reading enlightenment education. I remembered something that happened to my child recently. I thought my daughter read a lot of books, too. The school once selected a reading star, but there was no her name.

I went to find out that the school has its own designated reading list, such as books on traditional culture such as magic pens and horses. If your child's reading interest is not in this kind of subject matter, then even if he reads a lot of books, he will have no advantage under the competitive mechanism of the school and will not be encouraged and praised, which can be said to be a blow to his reading interest.

I try to recommend books of higher quality to my children. "Reading, you must first give her a screening. But don't force it. I buy her almost everything she likes. 」

I have the same attitude. In reading, as long as you find her interest, buy her a better book in this field. My daughter didn't transition from picture books to comic books until the second semester of grade two, and finally to big textbooks. At each stage, I went to inspect the classic books at this stage and gave them to her.

Very good. If a parent can persist in doing this for a long time, the effect will be very obvious at a certain stage.

03

The choice of educational school district for overseas immigrants

When choosing a school district, did you deliberately study a school district?

China parents will definitely choose the school district. Because parents in China attach importance to educational achievements, they will definitely choose the best school in their school district, and they will also inspect the rankings. As far as I know, all the places where schools rank well are places where Chinese gather, so we have no choice.

Does your child adapt quickly to studying in Canada?

Fast adaptation is also a characteristic of children. Therefore, "it is also good for immigrants to study early." 」

Are you going to transfer him to a private school in the future?

I have this idea, but there is no hurry. I haven't really understood the private school where I live. Private schools in Vancouver are more popular, and there are several good private schools in Ontario. In addition, "the cost of private schools is very high, which is slightly cheaper than domestic private schools", ranging from 654.38 yuan +0.5 million yuan to 200,000 yuan per year. If it is a very good and top private school, the cost will definitely be more expensive, more than 200,000 RMB per year. It is about 6,543,800 RMB more expensive than local public schools.

04

How do immigrant children learn their mother tongue?

For studying abroad, many Chinese mothers pay more attention to the local environment in China. How does your child learn Chinese in a foreign environment?

My son often takes a fancy to books, such as the Chinese and English versions of Harry Potter. He used to love reading Chinese, but after he arrived in Canada, he became fond of reading English, which shows that the influence of the environment is quite strong.

This is what I do in Chinese study.

"First of all, try to find him a Chinese book he usually reads. The amount of Chinese reading per week is set at about three hours per week.

Second, I have been teaching him Chinese. I refer to business schools. They teach him whatever he learns and teach him Chinese three or four times a week. "He is now more willing to learn poetry, ancient poetry and recognize new words. One is that the text is short, and the other is catchy. I found a set of Chinese documents for my sister. My brother knows new words and my sister learns them.

"I have always insisted on reading Chinese books to my sister, and I don't want her to forget the environment in China." There is nothing wrong with my sister's Chinese pronunciation now. Now a problem is that they have good Chinese reading and recognition skills, but writing is more difficult, or because they use less. It's a pity to study here.

You should be glad to hear the good news. The implementation of Pinyin in China is the implementation of Pinyin in Chinese, which has been delayed for many years. It was not until the popularization of computers that this matter was suddenly promoted. You can understand pinyin by typing with a computer in the future. It is hard to say whether it is necessary to write with a pen.

Then I'm relieved.

We can receive countless parents' consultations every day in Chunteng backstage, and the problems focus on the following categories:

Do you have any suggestions and experiences for domestic parents about their children studying abroad?

Some suggestions on the best time for children to study abroad

Ma Rui's suggestion on studying abroad (spring rattan finishing):

06

Future planning of immigrant children

Is there any big difference between the school he is attending now and the private schools in China?

Whether it is private or public in China, homework is relatively heavy. Children have a lot of homework to do when they come back from school every day. "The homework here is not so heavy, and he has more time to develop what he likes to do. They get home at 3: 30 every day in primary school. This gives him a lot of time to read. " Play with children. I like this growing environment very much.

You have been studying abroad for several years. Do you have any big plans for your children's future education, such as staying in Canada or choosing to transfer to the United States?

Personally, I think there is no need to go to school in America. I'm not very interested in him going to school in America. Because Canada has been able to meet our educational needs.

"For children's education, I think we should first respect children's interests and abilities. I advocate that parents make choices according to their children's conditions, not coercion. That is, you can choose the school you think she can attend. " You can have a plan, but you can't go too far against your child's wishes and growth rules. My child is not interested in music and likes sports events, so I have cultivated a lot of sports interests with him and encouraged him to stick to it. Not everyone has to learn the piano.
