During my stay in Japan, an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told me that a recent opinion poll showed that China ranked first among the countries that have the greatest and most important influence on Japan in the new century. I can clearly feel this in several bookstores in Tokyo, Osaka and Gao Gui. The books about China are not only varied, but also cover all aspects. In contrast, there are few books about Japan in China, and most of the introductions about the current situation in Japan are unreliable.

Heroes of the Three Kingdoms are juxtaposed with heroes of the Warring States Period in Japan.

The first is the indelible influence of ancient China culture on the Japanese. There are so many books on the history of China in Japanese bookstores that the heroes in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms are almost tied with the heroes in Japan during the Warring States Period. Books about ancient thinkers, writers and politicians in China also account for a considerable proportion. If this part is removed, it is hard to imagine what Japanese bookstores will look like.
