About Sun’s surname

Hakka surname---Sun (sun)

-------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ---

The surname Sun is the twelfth most common surname in China today and the 47th most common surname in Taiwan. Among the "Hundred Family Surnames", the surname Sun ranks third. It originated from the fact that the beloved concubine of Qian □, the leader of Wuyue Kingdom, was named Sun.

There are three main origins of the surname Sun.

The first one comes from the surname Ji. Uncle Ji, the eighth son of King Wen of Zhou Dynasty, was granted the title of Kang Shu. When King Cheng of Zhou Dynasty, he was renamed to Wei, and was known as Uncle Kang of Wei in history. Wei Wugong, the eighth grandson of Uncle Wei Kang, had a son named Huisun. Huisun's grandson Wuzhong, in memory of his grandfather, took his grandfather's character as his surname, hence his surname Sun.

The second type comes from the surname Mi, a descendant of Sun Shuao. Sun Shu'ao's first name is Ao, and his courtesy name is Sun Shu. Because he had outstanding political achievements when he was the magistrate of Chu State, his descendants took his surname as their surname. Because Ji Lian, the ancestor of Chu State, was surnamed Mi, it is said that the surname Sun comes from Mi surname.

The third type comes from the surname Gui, after Qi Guotian. Tian Wan was the son of Duke Li of Chen. He came to Qi State for refuge. His son Tian Shu was given the surname Sun by Qi Jinggong because of his military merits. Because the surname Chen came from the surname Gui, the surname Sun also came from the surname Gui.

Development and evolution: Sun Shu’s grandson Sun Wu fled to Wu State because of civil strife in Qi State and became a general. His descendants became a powerful family. By the time Sun Quan, the 22nd generation of Sun Wu, established the Kingdom of Wu in Jianye, Jiangdong in 222, the influence of the Sun surname reached its peak. In the Tang Dynasty, people surnamed Sun immigrated to Fujian twice more and entered Guangdong in the Ming Dynasty. The main settlement areas with the Sun surname are: Taiyuan, Le'an, Dongguan, Wujun, Fuyang, Qinghe, Luoyang, Shejun, Qingzhou, Changli, etc.
