Little Italy is a community in lower Manhattan, new york. It used to have a large number of Italians, and today there are still Italian shops and restaurants.

Historical region

Historically, Little Italy extended from Mulberry Street to Canal Street, north to Blick Street, west to Galeries Lafayette Street and east to Pauli Street. East is adjacent to Chinatown.

1926 In September, Neapolitan immigrants began to hold a one-day street religious celebration. Italian immigrants gathered in Mulberry Street to celebrate Saint Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples. At present, the San Gennaro Festival lasts 1 1 day, and it marches along Mulberry Street between Houston Street and Canal Street every September. It is an annual celebration of Italian culture and Italian-Americans.

With the arrival of immigrants from China, most of Little Italy has been absorbed and swallowed up by Chinatown. Once little Italy has shrunk to only one street. As a dining area, there are few Italian residents. The northern part of Little Italy, near Houston Street, is no longer considered as Little Italy. Today it is called Nolita, which is the abbreviation of "Little Northern Italy". Today, the mulberry street between Bloom Street and Canal Street is the only remaining part. There are more than twenty Italian restaurants on both sides of the street, which are very popular with tourists and local residents. Unlike Chinatown, which extends in all directions, there are more and more immigrants, and little Italy only retains a small part.

ItalianAware, an Italian cultural and heritage website, called Italian rule in the region "relatively short-lived". Many Italians get rich quickly, which gives them the opportunity to leave this crowded neighborhood and move to Brooklyn and Queens. At present, the region is called Little Italy more out of respect and nostalgia than reflecting the true ethnic and demographic composition.
